A wind shift saved Sagola Michigan from total destruction as a fire raged for hours, burning about 20 million feet of lumber and causing losses near 500000. Residents evacuated, highways cluttered with debris, while two sawmills and gasoline tanks stood near the blaze before the wind shifted.
Aug 5 report says a massive fire leveled a grain elevator and meat packing plant, injuring one fireman and affecting about 100 workers. Firemen predicted two weeks of efforts to control smoldering bins as officials estimate losses between 1.65 million and six million dollars.
The Texas Angora Goat Raisers Association wrapped up its annual convention in Rocksprings after opening with a parade led by Miss Patty Bell Morris. She had escaped from the Idaho state prison at Beise in May 1931 and was accused of poisoning four husbands and a male relative for insurance. Sentenced in Twin Falls Idaho in 1921 to 25 years to life.

In Nacogdoches Texas on August 5 an attempt by nine prisoners to break out was frustrated by police. The inmates forced open cell doors and sawed window bars with hacksaw blades supplied by an outside accomplice who tore the heavy window screen from its fastenings.

A second rain threat of the week failed to bring moisture as clouds moved toward Del Rio and dissipated amid a brief wind. Temperatures rose to 103 in the city and 161 on Thursday with a nightly low of 80. Rain fell Tuesday night in Sonora San Angelo and Central Texas.
