Two girls Marilyn Murphy nine and Lorraine Chinchar ten fell five stories into a narrow gap between buildings. Police cut through a brick wall to reach Marilyn as bystanders cheered. Lorraine was brought out by rope from the roof. Marilyn suffers probable back and leg fractures. Lorraine skull and internal injuries suspected.
Six persons were burned to death when a fire trapped them in a cabin in Rand Colorado. The blaze erupted while they slept as townspeople without fire fighting equipment watched helplessly. Victims included a man his wife three children and a ranch hand visitor.
The Pan-American Grace flying boat, missing since yesterday near Cristobal 30 miles northeast, was found totally under water with 11 passengers and a crew of three. The war department reported signals heard before radio contact ceased as U S forces searched sea and coast on both sides of the Atlantic.
Del Rio Volunteer Firemen to meet at 8 PM to review a Texas Firemen's Training School report. Chief Frank Jo Schmidt led Del Rio's team through an intensive five day session with perfect attendance and a 92 grade. Director H. B Brayton urges ongoing in-department training with free state support from Meld instructor GF Williams.
Senator Tom Connally of Texas urged President Roosevelt to nominate Judge Joseph Hutcheson Jr of Houston to the Supreme Court. Hutcheson, a judge on the Federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, was mentioned as a potential justice candidate during the visit.
Olive Carr, a Nevada girl missing since a week, was picked up by Electra police chief Walter Suttle. Ear Wilson, 26, was captured in Olney as a kidnaping suspect. authorities say the girl entered a vehicle with three men and headed toward Wichita Falls after hitching from Tonopah, Nevada.
In Raymondville on August 3 two ex Rangers began work as special investigators into the November disappearance of Luther and John Blanton on the King ranch. The move follows Ranger Captain Mill McMurray’s claim of a solution and signals the case may be resolved soon. Walter Hale and M J Simmons earlier sought commissions, with Gov Carmichael and Sheriff Cragg blocking, later becoming special deputy constables. Reports say Power Fenner and Morgan Miller, who arrested Lamadrid previously, have joined the King ranch effort.
Four residents of Tell Community were killed and one seriously injured when their automobile crashed into a bridge abutment fifteen miles south of Childress. The dead are J. T. Garrison John Byrnes Mrs. Byrnes and Mrs. Zara Ashby Jewel Smith suffered a fractured arm and leg.
National Labor Relations Board charges Weirton Steel with terrorism against the steelworkers organizing committee. Hearing set for August 9 in New Cumberland West Virginia. Complaint cites secret police known as the hatchet gang funded by the company and six additional acts harming workers rights. The board says 279 workers were fired for union activity between 1935 and 1937 and that company unions were illegally supported with funds.
President Roosevelt sent to the Senate the reappointment of Clyde Eastus as United States attorney for the Northern District of Texas. Mrs Eddie Duchin dies in New York sanitarium after childbirth. she was formerly Miss Marjorie Overrichs. Attorney General's department seeks to set aside temporary restraining order against the state board of education in San Antonio district judge hearing tomorrow over $22 per capita apportionment.
Lawrence Lowell, 80, Harvard president emeritus, was hospitalized after an automobile collision near Plymouth. He had recently failed a driver’s test for the elderly, then passed on reexamination, a test later repealed. Mrs Margaret Hayes, driver of the other car, suffered cuts and bruises.
Nipponese infantry press south from Tientsin as Japanese planes bomb Tehchow and Shantung. The central government’s forces move north along the Tientsin-Pukow line while Tokyo denies involvement in provocations. Reports detail raids on the Soviet consulate at Tientsin and intensified aerial attacks across Hopeh and surrounding areas.
