Paraguayan and Bolivian forces move toward conflict over Chaco claims. About 500 Paraguayan soldiers depart Asuncion as volunteers flood recruiting offices. Reports say 300 volunteers stormed a troop ship in eager bid to join the front. Women also seek sendings to battle lines.
Alfred von Niezychowski, now a Detroit resident, announces run for Democratic nomination for Michigan’s first district congressman. In Brewster County, Townsend defeats J Turney Terrell for renomination as State representative, with the complete district returns showing Terrell 2,422 to Townsend 2,518, a Townsend gain of 96 votes. Terrell had earlier held a slight lead based on earlier reports.
State crew widens the Eagle Pass road stretch near Del Rio and moves into Quemado Valley to prepare a 12 mile widened route. About 30 workers with multiple tractors clear mesquite stumps as they pave and gravel the center bed. Five miles of the Eagle Pass route are already paved, with more sections expected to follow this fall.
Three crewmen of the schooner Milton S. Lankford were believed drowned after a collision with the bay liner State of Maryland in the Potomac. The schooner rolled beneath the liner’s keel and the larger vessel sustained only minor damage.
Gen. Eduardo Hay announced plans in Juarez to establish a far flung supervision of the Mexican customs service along the northern border. The border from Nogales to Nuevo Laredo will be split into three sectors with supervisors assigned to work with customs guards to curb contraband from the United States. The plan emerged from a conference with Manuel Harrasti Abelardo Calles and Terminel among others.
Del Rio fire department responded to a 12 AM alarm in San Felipe Monday, fighting a two room dwelling owned by Antonio Flores. The structure, valued at 225 dollars, was nearly a total loss with no insurance. Cause unknown as flames consumed the mass of the building, 1,850 feet of hose deployed from the hydrant.

Canyon Texas Aug 3 Bids for the Panhandle Plains Historical Society museum construction will be opened at the West Texas State Teachers College office on August 20. Plans are completed and accepted with $25 000 state funds to be matched by local contributions from Panhandle residents.

Washington Aug 3 The Friends of Speaker John N Garner expect his return in about two weeks to launch a campaign tour. Indications point to an extended tour with speeches planned in New England and along the Atlantic seaboard and visits across the North Midwest and leveling in the Dakotas Colorado Illinois and Iowa. The Democratic vice presidential candidate may deliver one or two speeches before September.
The Oklahoma City Livestock Exchange voted to back the Ninth Federal Land Bank District making $3,000,000 in Reconstruction Finance Corp loan funds available to stockmen. D V Lackey and J Marsh sent a telegram supporting a Denver formed plan to rediscount loans for stockmen across Oklahoma New Mexico and Kansas. Lackey called financing livestock feeding operations a top agricultural problem.
R L Thompson formerly of Mexia and Fred Moutray are jointly indicted for murder in the slaying of N H Poland whose nude body was found in the Pecos River in March 1930. Thompson is held at Washington State penitentiary in Walla Walla.

The Del Rio Stone Company sues Southern Pacific Lines in Houston District Court seeking 5 million dollars in actual damages. It alleges the railroad conspired to delay passenger station construction to regain quarry possession near Standart on the Sycamore, 128 miles east of Del Rio. The stone company maintains its main offices in Houston.

Mr and Mrs George W McMullen arrived in Del Rio on a Wednesday visit from San Antonio. McMullen recently retired from the Southern Pacific Lines as conductor and is noted as the first mayor of Del Rio and a long time Herald subscriber since 1895.
Mrs. Cora Glassford was granted a divorce in San Antonio from Pelham Glassford superintendent of police in Washington D C. The couple married in Fort Riley Kansas in 1907 and she cited abandonment as the cause.
Doak Carter chief of staff says the remaining E F veterans will relocate from Johnstown to another Pennsylvania site as soon as possible. Mayor McCloskey calls a showdown on B E F plans after Waters claims veterans won’t disband. Waters learns Maryland won’t permit a permanent camp and Governor Ritchie urges health clearances as talks continue. May or McCloskey plans to rent trucks to help move the encamped veterans.
Preliminary work on the Devil's River highway project has begun with A. R. Popejoy leading a small crew on drainage and gravel tasks. A second crew operates at another site along the highway, and men seeking highway jobs can contact Mr. Popejoy by phone.
The body of 11 year old Evelyn Sanford, who disappeared Saturday in Ludington Michigan, was found buried in the basement of a vacant house behind Francis Nash's home. Nash was taken into custody and questioned.
Ann Alvarado wife of Don Alvarado film star filed for divorce in Chihuahua Mexico on grounds of mutual consent. The couple wed in 1924 and this action follows long marriage.
