Capt Luke Dowe of Del Rio was elected assistant color bearer of the Texas Ex-Rangers at their Santa Anna session. He retired from the U S Customs Service July 1 1935 after service since 1892 and earlier served as a Texas Ranger from 1890 to 1892. Santa Anna was named permanent meeting place as Walter A. Early Brownwood praised old rangers and peace officers. Adjutant General Carl Nesbitt paid high tribute to the rangers.
Del Rio, Texas, now has the fourth lowest electric rate among 10 000 to 25 000 population towns. The Federal Power Commission survey shows 25 kWh at 2 45 dollars now 2 25 dollars and 100 kWh at 5 60 dollars now 5 25 dollars. Del Rio beats several Texas cities on 100 kWh costs and the survey groups 10 000 to 25 000 population towns.
A car of lepers bound for a leprosy colony off Louisiana coast passed through Del Rio on the Southern Pacific Railway on Thursday. The passengers, closely guarded, were en route from the West Coast to the detention island for treatment.
A state education meeting for county and independent district officials and trustees is set for August 13 at the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio. Attendees will include superintendents, school board members, principals, teachers, and PTA leaders to discuss school classifications standardization laws transportation and high school tuition followed by sessions on state music and vocational education.
Associated Press reports a heat wave claims ten lives across the Mid West with four deaths in Chicago and two each in Oklahoma and Ohio plus one in Arkansas. Brief heavy rains hit New York while snow fell in Western Montana mountains. Torrents of rain caused flooding and livestock losses in Pima and Thatcher Arizona.
McAllen theater offers two passes to anyone bringing a black widow spider to the box office. Buddy McElroy captured a female spider and her 104 offspring, keeping them to earn 210 theatre tickets for the family.
A heavy dust storm on the Dun can Lordsburg highway caused a collision between a truck and an automobile injuring George A. Richens of this city who was taken to the hospital with a broken arm and internal injuries.
James E. Connolly of Del Rio won a best artillery driver medal and a first class pistol shot bar after a month at Camp Bullis with the Citizens Military Training Camp of the Eighth Corps Area. He drove one of 18 trucks in motorized field artillery and earned the award amid 950 attendees. Connolly plans return to Company M for senior year in the White Corps.
Attorney General Cummings condemned the acquittal of Arthur Fregenheimer, alias Dutch Schultz, on income tax evasion charges as a terrible miscarriage of justice. In Bryan, M. M. Riedel was freed on bond after a fatal shooting, while in Angleton Houston editors faced contempt trials.
Geneva August 2 Leaders of the League of Nations Council canceled a planned public session as Italy and Ethiopia opposed the peace formula. Mussolini and Tecle Hawariate reportedly objected to portions of the text including wording and punctuation and to fixing dates for further talks if negotiations among England France and Italy fail.
In Washington on August 2, Representative Treadway of Massachusetts mocked Secretary Morgenthau’s handling of the $270,000,000 tax bill. He said Morgenthau was ashamed of it or unable to analyze it and cited Hill’s claim that the Ways and Means Committee drafted the measure without majority party input.
Berlin Aug 2 Roland Freisler state secretary for the Ministry of Justice disclosed that activity against the Nazi party and its organizations would be treason against the people and punished by death under the new criminal code. Severe punishment also would apply to treasonable action by foreigners, but such action could not be treason against people since foreigners are bound only by hospitality.
West Texas buyers report active trade as about 40,000 lambs are contracted for Fall delivery in the San Angelo and Del Rio areas with prices around 4 per head for lambs. Ewes command 3 per head with recent rises. Mutton lambs bring 6¢ per lb for Fall delivery while ewe lambs bid 7¢ or more. Many ranchers hold ewe lambs after rains greened ranges. Several large ewes sales and new deliveries are noted across Big Lake San Angelo Texan Mason Brady Rochelle and other local ranches.
Kerrville banker Louis Schreiner, head of a wool and mohair commission house, predicts a Fall recovery for livestock raisers. He cites rapid earlier gains in livestock and range, notes Edwards County as a top goat producer, expects good mohair prices, and observes Kerrville goat sales at 2.50 per head. He sees calf crops in South Texas but a generally tight cattle supply.
Cameron reports James Mc Adoo Gilchrist, aged two, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Gilchrist of Thorndale, died at Cameron hospital after sustaining severe burns from scalding water since July 19.
Chairman Harry Hines of the Texas Highway Commission estimated West Texas would receive about $6,000,000 in road projects from the $15,500,000 state and federal funds not including WPA. The commission extended Highway 15 from Fort Worth through Mineral Wells and several towns to the New Mexico line and approved projects on No. 9 from O’Donnell in Lynn County and a northwest county route from Big Spring to Martin County.
Dr and Mrs John R Brinkley and Johnnie returned Friday from Montreal to Del Rio. They visited Anticosti Island once owned by Menier the chocolate king and later by Consolidated Paper Company now governed by Townsend. They describe a villa with throne room chair and art noting deer herds nine miles of roads and few licensed cars. The party plans to go to New York then home by September via McGill Notre Dame Cathedral and healing shrines.
A 26-year-old man identified as Mandeville Zenge was seized in a west side taxi garage in Chicago after being sought in four states for the mutilation death of Dr. Walter J. Bauer. Zenge, silent, is being questioned by state authorities as Cary Zenge admitted custody. The victim, a Kirksville osteopathy professor, was abducted in Ann Arbor and killed in Chicago after a jealous former suitor warned of a farewell note.
