Funeral services for J. H. Boyce 56 were held at the Doran Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roland Murray officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery. Boyce died Saturday night at 112 West Fourth Street after months of heart disease. He came to Del Rio in 1934 to carry mail between Del Rio and Rocksprings. He was born November 7, 1878 in Burnet County and lived much of his life in Rocksprings country. Survivors include his widow Marie Boyce and son Billie, a brother Elmo Boyce of Rocksprings, and two cousins John Henry and Seiker Henry of Rocksprings.
The Quemado valley community remains in need of clothing and bedding as relief efforts continue. Medical aid supplied from a large tent complex in Normandy treats victims while Fifth Cavalry tents house the homeless and a Red Cross convoy delivers clothing and food. Water scarcity prompted hauling water, and relief organizers assure transport support for aid deliveries.
City health officer Dr. D A York urges homeowners to pour kerosene oil weekly into cesspool drains to form an oil film that inhibits mosquito breeding. He also advises disposing of water-holding containers and burning or covering garbage to reduce flies.
Grand jurors for the regular April term of District Court were impanelled Monday morning. O. R. Weinert is foreman. Other jurors include T. J. Jarrett, Ike Billings, Emmett Skiles, Linn Davis, Allie Daniels, Ira Burditt, Van Adams, R. M. Crosby, L. D. Brauer, I. B. Newman and Grover Poole.
Congressman Maury Maverick of Texas introduced a resolution prohibiting American troops from fighting on foreign soil. The measure states war would be defensive only and bans transporting troops abroad, with an embargo on munitions to any country at war and possible peacetime embargo power for the President.
Maverick calls for preventing war and declares that the government must stay out of foreign conflicts while protecting American personnel. He urges calm, notes friendly neighbors and oceans, and argues adopting peace as a national policy could aid world peace and prevent tragedy.
Leading Texas authorities forecast a substantial mohair price rise with buyers in the field offering 20 cents for grown hair and 30 cents for kid hair, up two cents from recent offers. Collins & Aikman bought a car load from Lewis & Son in Llano, while 400000 pounds moved during the week as Studley & Emery bought through Boston buyers. Wool also shows strength with lamb wool selling at 19 cents or higher and 12 month wool at 22 cents, a new high in recent months.
John Gist formerly of Del Rio now ranching in Magdalena New Mexico recounts a 1910 episode involving Terrazas Ranch sheep a train robbery and rumors of his execution. He says he was never harmed and continued with his purchase and travel despite bandit activity.
In White Plains New York on April 8 the Castle Heights Methodist Episcopal Church board disapproved Easter symbols like the bunny eggs cards and hats deeming them pagan expressions and saying they are forced by those who profit from them.
Pan American Airways postponed the first experimental clipper flight from San Francisco to Honolulu to April 16. The carrier said the delay gives stamp collectors more time to obtain first flight covers.
President Roosevelt lands in Jacksonville aboard the destroyer Farragut to start his return by train to Washington. An outbreak in Danzig leaves a German Nazi and a Pole dead and another Pole beaten as violence erupts with shots fired.
Funeral services for 62 year old Mrs. Elizabeth Miller were held Sunday at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. A. J. Taillon officiating. Interment followed in Uvalde. She died Saturday afternoon of a heart attack at her home 106 Arbor Place in Garden Parks. She was born May 3, 1872 and married Charles Louis Miller in 1899. Survivors include three sons Clarence Earl and Claude Miller a sister Mrs. W J Burns and two brothers John and Ed Gilder.
Sir Herbert Ames, Canadian publicist and former League of Nations treasurer, addressed Sam Houston College on Hitler at the Crossroads in Hunteville on a Saturday.
In Drumright Oklahoma Kathryn Cline seven was found murdered in a barn after being kidnapped. Gay Williams twenty confessed to beating the girl with a large rock near her home and stated she asked to die so she could visit her dead mother.
In Del Rio, 705 votes were cast to name three members to the Del Rio Independent School District board. The tally shows a close race with Dutch Wardlaw leading at 390, Cathryn Wayman 357, and Bryan Kelley 353, followed by Marshall Smith 351, W A Earnest 330, and W E Tinnin 304. Wardlaw seeks re election.
Leading House Democrats reached agreement to consult President Roosevelt before deciding on applying the no amendment gag rule to the social security bill. They did not seek a decision on the gag idea but aim to secure his approval of the bill in its current form.
Partly cloudy to cloudy weather continues tonight with a rise in temperatures. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy and warmer with yesterday’s high of 76 and low of 62, while this morning’s minimum reached 60.
