Ben Stefani was robbed late at night as he rode home on North Fifth Street. Two men blocked his path, knocked him from his bicycle, and searched for valuables, taking his open faced gold watch and his keys. Police pursued two suspects near Spring Valley tracks, but descriptions were unclear and the men escaped.
United Press reports from Washington indicate Americans spent about 460 thousand dollars monthly on amusements through war tax returns. May tax receipts show 26.18 million dollars from candy soft drinks tobacco and related goods. Tobacco products remain the favored indulgence for many Americans.
Preparations completed for the opening session of the League of Nations economic conference in Brussels. The Spreckels daughter in law said Barrett received a diamond and pearl necklace valued at $125,000 to clean and insure it. charges allege he sold the gems and kept the proceeds.
London dispatches report peace talks and border issues in the era of Bolshevik influence and Polish military actions. In hometown news, a large Republican rally is set for eight tonight on Third Street with Adjutant General Dickson addressing about party questions and a city band prelude.
Felvin Ringold, 19, a cashier at Kent State Bank in Grand Rapids, staged a $40,000 hoax to cover a shortage. He entered the bank first, shouted for police alleging an accomplice, and later confessed after two hours. Police said he fixed the story to hide the missing funds.
