Merchants across DeKalb join a massive Dollar Day sale on Saturday September 14. Stores offer half price or less on most items to entice shoppers from near and far and a Chronicle special edition will spread the word. Strong signs of real savings and value inflation special for DeKalb buyers.
Ed Anderson and Peter Pederson, both Belvidere residents, were injured when their motorcycle collided with a Ford on the wrong side of Genoa street. Marshall Roach of Sycamore, in the machine’s sidecar, lost teeth and suffered a jaw gash. All three worked for Nelson company building two I C cement bridges near Genoa. Pederson escaped with severe bruises. Anderson died at St Joseph's Hospital.
Cavalrymen from Fort Riley to Fort Sheridan expected September 26 or 27, with 220 soldiers and 320 horses to camp on Hunt lots east of town. Government camps being transferred. Auto convoys already moving from Camp Grant toward new postings.
Large crowds attended picnics under the DeKalb Council Knights of Columbus at Electric Park with a ball game, dancing, and active sports. Similar crowds gathered for the Old Settlers picnic at Shabbona featuring a full program of events and speeches.
Word reached here this morning of the sudden death of Irving Tylor at Plano, a relative of Lynn Chambers of this city. He had gone to town and, returning about a block from his home, was stricken with apoplexy and died instantly. He was about 60 and had not been in good health for several years. He was a cousin of Mr. Chambers. Funeral arrangements had not been heard yet.
United Press reports President Harding will host a national unemployment conference likely starting around September 20. Hoover backs creating federal agencies to direct job placement for about 6.75 million unemployed, with cities like Cleveland Buffalo Atlanta and Pittsburg showing declines. St Paul reported 5600 to 6000 jobless. New York seeks a census and home placement for unemployed men.
Chronicle notice clarifies a district meeting of the Encampment of Odd Fellows is planned for October 1 with grand lodge officers to assist in the work. A November 1 date was previously stated but the October 1 gathering is the confirmed event.
Daniel F. Breen, a Lewis Institute student, confessed to threatening Mrs. Charles W. Love to extort money. He was nabbed near a telephone booth after demanding payment, with clippings about Love’s appeal to authorities for protection from Ku Klux Klan enemies found on him.
The United States Railroad Labor Board met in executive session in Chicago on September 7 to handle Pennsylvania Railroad defiance of the board s orders. It ordered railroads to confer with employee representatives to draft new working agreements. Elisha Leeds, vice president of Pennsylvania, argued the board exceeded its authority in New York remarks.
Workmen cleared debris at Nehring Electrical works after Sundays wind storm. Pairs of brick walls remaining on the west end are being veled ready for repair. Rebuilding work is expected to start within a few days.
Fire today swept the town of Jeffries, two miles from Rhinelander, causing about $1,000,000 in damage. The blaze raged beyond control at 8:1 A M. and rescuers abandoned hope of saving the town. Fire equipment was rushed from surrounding towns, with the blaze starting in the lumber yards. Weather outlook for Illinois shows fair tonight and Thursday with possible showers Thursday.
Chicago reports Judge K M Landis ordered wage cuts for about 60 000 building trades workers from 2 to 40 cents per hour across forty trades in a wartime relief decision. He noted outside bids would lower costs by about 20 percent and left stone cutters at 1 25 per hour.
Memorial services for United States naval officers and men who perished in the ZR-2 disaster will be held on the pier at South Brooklyn at 2:30 p m September 17, the Navy Department announced. Secretary Denby and senior naval officers will participate. Also a dance at Kings Hall on Thursday Sept 8 with a three piece orchestra for all attendees.
A Grant Highway construction accident left G. W. Bishop in critical condition after a cable broke and a giant clam shell shovel dropped and closed on his head and shoulders. He was rushed to the hospital with a fractured skull.
The League of Nations Assembly adjourned amid a Chile Bolivia dispute over treaty revision. Augustine Edwards, Chilean delegation head, argued the league lacks authority to revive treaties from Versailles onward. Bolivian and Chilean delegates warned of possible withdrawals as debates continued.
Officials in Rossclare Illinois report the Hardin county coal miners strike under control with no large scale outbreaks. Minor clashes between miner deputies occur but no widespread violence. Refugee claims about forced flight are denied as residents return home shortly after. Governor Small to propose disarming mine guards employed by owners at Rosidaire. A delegation led by ILLINOIS REDESON OF LABOR vice president Win Corbin will present the report.
DeKalb will be represented at the Sandwich Fair with a large Kiwanians sponsored crowd to travel by a long string of cars. The group invites all residents to join, promising an appealing program of races and attractions tomorrow.
In DeKalb Sunday night a severe wind tore part of the south coal chutes from their supports and sent debris into a nearby field. The north chutes remained intact. Repairs are underway and all engines for coal and water were handled without issue.
United Press reports a statewide drop with only 16 infantile paralysis cases last week. Five cases occurred in Chicago. Director J D Rawlings states the outbreak is on the decline and expresses belief in continued improvement.
John G. Hessler associate director of Mellon Institute Pittsburgh and former James Milliken University chemistry professor is appointed head of Knox College chemistry department. Notice invites Cortland town hall meeting September 12 at 8 P M to explain United States Grain Growers Association matters and answer farmers questions.
Frank Babich a prominent member of the local foreign colony was fined 100 dollars for beating his wife. Investigations by federal officials are under way as more serious charges may follow. Babich reportedly kept up correspondence back in Croatia and induced a young girl to come to this country claiming to be single. She allegedly confessed to the full matter and had claimed Babich as a half sister to obtain a passport. Babich remains under surveillance and is not allowed to depart the area. He is said to have transferred 1500 dollars and acted suspiciously.
In a Saturday court session, attorneys announced that Kalb Sycamore and Interacton company paid damages to plaintiffs Nellie Kennedy Ethel Beamish and the Automobile Insurance Association. The suit arising from a December 22 street car collision near Sycamore DeKalb road was dismissed. Injuries included Kennedy’s broken leg pelvis and crushed shoulder and Beamish’s broken ribs. auto totaled. Damages amount undisclosed, but settlement described as satisfactory given the street car company’s finances.
At a city council meeting last evening a step was taken toward Ellwood addition paving next spring. The council will hire an inspector to conduct house to house checks, mapping sewer drain and water connections and identifying those yet to be installed to avoid later pavement tearing.
Conditions are returning to normal after Sunday night’s storm. Wire companies work to restore service as telephone linemen rush to put local instruments back in service and toll lines resume usual operation within a week.
Twenty five survivors of the 95th Ill. volunteer Infantry elected W. G. Sullivan of Marengo as president and planned a reunion at Marengo next September 4. With dwindling Civil War veterans a joint reunion for all regiments from this part of the state will be organized. Also notices about local business and meetings appear in the fragment.
Anna R. Dodge, longtime Sycamore resident, died Monday at her daughter Mrs. Thomas Sample’s Park avenue home. Born October 19, 1830 in Herkimer New York, she was married to Thomas Dodge. survivor includes daughter Mrs. Sample and six grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm at the Park avenue home with Rev. James O’May. interment Elmwood Cemetery.
Four bandits held up Kansas City Southern passenger No 2 between Texarkana and Bloomingburg and looted the mail coach after wounding a porter and firing on mail clerks. They forced the engineer to drive the train to a Sulphur River bridge before the engine and mail car were looted. Authority figures, sheriffs and deputies, led by local officials, pursued the bandits.
E. M. Fellows of the secretary of state's automobile department, Springfield, is in DeKalb for several days to review licenses and warn autoists and chauffeurs. He will not issue a second warning after the first notice, and will return after inspecting Sandwich Fair and five conditions observed there for further work.
Firefighters responded to a basement blaze at 915 Oak Street believed started by children playing with matches. The fire alarm circuit had just been repaired and box 32 call came in after an hour. One large chemical tank fed the flames but damage was limited.
London memorial services in Westminster Abbey honored British and American victims of the Z R 2 disaster. King George, Queen Mary, British royalty, government officials, and prominent Americans attended as crowds filled Whitehall and Victoria Street for the noon ceremony.
Tacoma Sept 7 an air plane manhunt was planned to find Lucky Roy Gardner the notorious train bandit who escaped from McNeil Island federal penitentiary Monday night. He has now made his third escape authorities scoured the countryside with bloodhounds brought in as search efforts continue.
The city council passed the annual tax ordinance with a levy about $10,000 lower than last year, now $52,766.50 compared to $62,352.50 in 1921. Causes include a $15,000 gain from reassessment changes, careful fiscal management, and a cash balance of $32,376.54. Additional actions covered sidewalk dedication, septic tank repairs, flood remedies, platting new west side addition, revival of an underground station passage plan, and settlement for street drain work.
John H. Stray of Kingston township brought the pelt of an old wolf shot last March to the county clerk's office to claim bounty but the time for claiming had expired. The wolf approached his hen house for chickens, he waited for a second visit and shot it as it neared the coop. The hide was sold to pay for the prior night's chicken dinner.
A petition from residents to rename the southern city thoroughfare is approved by aldermen. The street will honor the late president, replacing the unnamed South Street with Roosevelt Street. Call Northern Illinois State Teachers College for student help during the year at phone 15, 27.
