At St Charles State School for Boys in Elgin, over 200 inmates became violently ill after noon meals. Officials investigate possible food poisoning or spoiled meals with roach powder found near flour. Dr. A L Mann tests the beet stew as the inquiry proceeds.
A full house at De Kalb Teachers College auditorium praised Madame Schumann-Heink in a masterful performance. Arthur Loesser accompanied on piano with elegant solos. audience from Dixon to St Charles sought encore. Plans form for future annual concerts as locals recall the night.
Springfield, Oct. 22. The last assembly proposed salary boosts for Governor Len Small's appointees and the circuit court, led by Judie E. Smith, ruled the boosts constitutional while five hundred thousand dollars in reserve appropriations to the department of finance were held unconstitutional. Appeals were granted to the supreme court.
United Press from Paris reports Marshal Foch and his staff left Havre this afternoon to board the French liner Paris for New York. The travelers include senior officers and staff as part of a planned crossing noted in dispatches.

Calvin C. Wampler, 47, of Aurora, wed Sunday to Anna Shadeland, a Sandwich, Illinois widow, and was arrested Wednesday on a bigamy charge. He is accused of a second wife in Bonne Terre, Missouri after a letter addressed to Anna Wampler at Bonne Terre was returned undelivered.
DeKalb County reports 460 members in U S Grain Growers Inc as the new farmer owned grain marketing group expands. Nationwide membership reaches 5 284 in the Farmers company with Illinois counting 226 of 469 elevators stoned and state tallies led by Wisconsin and North Dakota.
Kiwanis to hold its fourth annual district convention in Aurora November 3 and 4 drawing about 1000 delegates from UWlinors and eastern Iowa clubs. Local committees organize entertainment. a special women’s committee handles visiting female guests. Open Thursday with leadership conference, then business sessions and speeches. Friday mirrors schedule ending with banquet and grand ball at the armory chaired by Guy Guernsey of Chicago.
Superintendent Arthur Russell of the county highway department secures six army trucks from the state and expects them within a day or two. The department will then have seven trucks, with storage space sought for over winter. New patrolman Martin Mack, from Kirkland, will cover routes from rare to Kingston and toward the state road in South Grove township. Frank Klein, patrolling Pier township, aims to shift roads away from crowned centers to level, well drained surfaces within a year. Patrolman Meak shows good early results with the patrol machine installed.
Across Halifax Nova Scotia on October 22 the Gloucester schooner Elsie tore its fore topmast late in the first fisherman's trophy race. Canadian contender Bluenose led by about a mile before the mishap and crossed the line two minutes ahead of Elsie. Weather outlook for Illinois forecasts cooler near term.
Friday brought no horse purchases in DeKalb despite several horses being brought to Martin Brock barns. Chicago buyers offered only a few cents on the dollar, with Brock noting a hearse once sold for 160 dollars three years ago now bought back for about 10 dollars. He doubts horse sale days will end soon, though interest wanes with cars and tractors rising in prominence.
Paris reports of Oct 22 state the ministry of the interior forbids a Sunday demonstration at the American embassy as police brace for disruption. Mrs Katherine Holderness dies after illness at her Evans avenue home. Born 1857 in St Charles, she moved to DeKalb 40 years ago, married James C. Holderness in 1876. Survived by four children Joln Hjelte Grace Busse James Clayton, five grandchildren, one brother John Bray and one sister Mrs Cooley. Funeral tomorrow at home with Rev Rh Barrett Evans of the Methodist church. Burial in Fairview cemetery.
A DeKalb plan to streamline local relief efforts gathers civic groups under a general committee to oversee winter aid. The Kiwanis club backs a Good Fellow movement, calling for representatives from societies to form a governing body at a Thursday meeting at the Vassar Swiss rooms.
Editor Frank Lowman of the Sandwich Free Press previews successor John G. Boyle named to head the division of parks in the Illinois department of public works and buildings by Governor Small. Boyle will supervise eight historic parks including Starved Rock with revenue from concessions near 9 000 dollars yearly.
Thiago Oct 22. Federated shop crafts decided not to join the planned October 30 strike by five big brotherhoods. B M Jewell, president of the AFL railway department, said the decision came after days of talks with union chairman. He noted lack of guaranteed support from brotherhoods and said the group would wait for new shop rules before reconsidering a strike. In Houston the nationwide railroad strike began with 167 International and Great Northern trainmen walking out, about 160 quitting in total. Palestine reported 35 leaving, and San Antonio yards saw 16 depart. Union officials predicted about 600 men out as the stoppage spread. Chicago proposals for settlement were prepared by the labor board for union heads and executives. failure to reach accord earlier was blamed on executives not agreeing to wage-related rate reductions.
The Chester White hog sale at Shoreland farm Wednesday with Harry A Rolands as manager drew a large crowd with nearly fifty automobiles at the grounds. The offering was of the best and the large tent was filled with interested hog men. The agricultural class of the DeKalb township high school with Professor Furr were in attendance.
Washington date Oct 22 the Interstate Commerce Commission ordered a general reduction in freight rates on hay grain and feed in the western and inter mountain territory. The move aims to avert a threatened rail strike as an early government response to the disruption.
Birmingham Ala Oct 22 Rev Edwin R Stephens a Methodist minister was freed today A jury last night acquitted him of the second degree murder charge in the slaying of Father James E Coyle a Catholic priest on August 11 The case drew wide attention and ended with an acquittal.
Vere Goodyear has purchased the bakery building on Lincoln Highway now occupied by his business. The deal closed recently after delays with repairs. Goodyear plans to open a top delicatessen while maintaining the bakery’s high standards.
Mrs. 1 an Baweell was taken suddenly ill yesterday afternoon at her home on South Fourth Street and for a time her condition was alarming. Fireman Fawcett reports Mrs. Fawcett somewhat improved and the attending physician urges family to remain hopeful.
Frank Lalley 35 a DeKalb native died yesterday at his home in Vail Iowa after a short illness He is survived by his wife and four sons and four daughters all married except one son living at home His golden wedding anniversary was celebrated last July Funeral services are to be held in Vail Iowa with Mrs W Hummell Miss Stella Hummel and Mrs Arthur Graffam traveling to Iowa for the rites
