Dr Ira Landrith, a leading platform orator, will speak this evening at the Method church on the liquor issue. The large audience is expected as he has long been active in wartime YMCA camps and major prohibition drives.
Doctor Landrith, joint author of the slogan A saloonless Nation by 1920, travels the United States under the Anti saloon League banner. He speaks on American education and world rebuilding, colleges versus beds and revels, and the water wagon, drawing large crowds and thrilling audiences.
From Chicago westward, two or three gangs of Chicago Telephone Co repairmen work replacing poles damaged in the sleet storm. They are in Malta Pow area, expected to continue until cold weather. Utilities statewide rush to repair outdoor lines and poles ahead of winter.
Anna Elizabeth Niebel a former Follies beauty says Congressman Manuel Herrieq boasted of his beauty and asked her to marry him then failed. She filed preliminary papers in a 350 000 breach of promise suit. Also notes the birth of a son to Mr and Mrs J S Willeti on Armistice Day in the city hospital.

Springfield, Nov. 17 United Press reports a new low average bid of 26 253.214 per mile for a cement road built to 1921 standards. The seven mile Adams county stretch drew the lowest bid at about 25 400 per mile, with the governor praising saving taxpayers from higher quotes and noting prior bids were rejected as too high.
Chicago carpenters threaten action as 1200 non union workers are hired at 1.00 per hour while other trades accept the wage award. Building trades council to consider sympathetic support resolutions, risking a union fracture.
The War Finance Corporation has approved 48 advances totaling 2,074,000 for agricultural and live stock purchases. The package includes 125,000 for Illinois.
Nicholas Palmos who left American Steel and Wire to fight in Greece was thought dead after letters to DeKalb. A cablegram from Greece confirmed he is alive, with the Greek word meaning all right. Relatives here express relief.
In Chicago today five bandits kidnapped Northern Trust Company messenger John Hebel in front of downtown post offices. He was forced into a car with a gun to his head, then covered with a wet blanket and carried away. he was later dumped from the auto miles away with the mail stolen. The bank company said the loss is not great.
Nathan King has not been in good health for several days. He is near 50 years of membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, affiliating in April 50 years ago. Several brother Odd Fellows plan to visit him while he is ill, and he welcomes them.
Johnstown Pennsylvania reports six persons killed when an automobile plunged from a 30 foot cliff early today. Two men and a woman died at the scene. no other passengers were aboard.
A Washington census bulletin reports Illinois population at 6,485,280 in 1920, up from 5,638,591 in 1910. DeKalb County shows 1920 population 21 with 15,880 males and 15,450 females, 7,865 dwellings and 8,213 families, plus 199 Negro residents. The city of DeKalb lists 1,726 dwellings, 1,994 families, and 106 illiterates. Foreign-born whites include 1,463 Swedes and 587 Germans among many nations. the report is overseen by William C. Hunt.

Mrs Jennie Keast received word late last night of her sister Mrs Nolte’s sudden death at her Chicago home. Keast left early this morning for Chicago and will likely stay until after funeral services. no illness details have reached relatives.

United Mine Workers of America seek to overrule a federal injunction against the check-off system at the mine. The district court of appeals in Chicago heard the case and, with Judges Evans Alschuler and Baker presiding, expect a decision in a few days.
In heavy fog today fifteen were seriously injured when a crowded Oak Park elevated train crashed into another. Train guard Pat McGuire and two others were rescued from beneath the wreckage by the fire department.
Several Chicago churches at Sunday services urged Illinois senators to back the Campbell Willis anti beer measure now before the Senate. They urged action to block prohibition opponents who challenge the 18th amendment through regulations on medicinal beer and wines. The bill passed the House by a large margin and goes to a Senate vote on November 18.
The First Lutheran church will install Rev E W Magnusson as pastor tomorrow evening with Rev Peter Peterson of the Illinois conference officiating. Several Lutheran pastors from the Rockford district will attend. About 750 church members are expected to attend the ceremony, with friends of the congregation welcomed.
Friends announce Mark Joseph has recovered sufficiently from surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis to return home to Romison. His brother Willis says a full return by month’s end is uncertain, with some doubt about an earlier date.
Rotarians praised Dr. Landrith for a concise noon address on his work. He is regarded as a strong platform speaker and will present a fee free address at the Methodist church this evening, with expected full seating.
Washington November 17 negotiations between the United States and Mexico over recognition of the Obregon government have reached a deadlock. Obregon refuses to sign the pledge protecting American lives and property that Secretary Hughes demands, and the State Department remains firm on its position.
Eleven jurors were chosen to try Roscoe Arbuckle for manslaughter in the Virginia Rappe death case. Testimony was expected to begin later today. Three men remained as part of the 11 jurors selected so far.
United Press from Paris on November 17 states that Jugo Slavs have captured 157 towns in Albania and driven 40,000 residents into flight. H A L Fisher the British delegate to the League of Nations told the council. the British consul at Durazzo reported the movement as widespread.

Forenoon report from Jacksonville Illinois states 75 year old Sam Zachary a well known farmer of Orleans is lodged on murder charges for the killing of 48 year old fellow farmer Crawford near Franklin after an argument. A coroner's jury was to hold an inquest today assessing the death.
A seven percent reduction in agricultural freight rates will apply to all parts of the country except New England states. The discount was announced at a meeting of railroad officials in New York.
