Senate tariff fight centers on sugar and shoes
Washington reports a major senate tariff contest looming over sugar and shoes. Independent Republican and Democratic groups press the people's legislative service to study rates while hearings begin Monday in the senate finance committee with testimony for and against the proposed house tariff bill. Sugar faces a 3 cent per pound basic rate with 20 percent Cuban discount, up from 2.20 under existing law. Shoe duties rise 20 percent with 35 percent on certain high grade Czech Slovakia shoes, likely boosting prices as current shoes are duty free. The Republican tariff organization forms amid committee hearings.

May Change Rum Rules
