Italian forces counter along the Piave line as heavy rains turn the river into a flood. Twelve of fourteen enemy bridges are said carried away, trapping Austrian detachments on the west bank and forcing defensive holds amid air and artillery bombardment.
Local drivers are lax about passing standing street cars, risking fines and arrests. The notice warns motorists to stop when meeting a street car loading or unloading passengers and recalls safety first. Mrs. John Rolland and son visit Earl Rolland home in West Chicago with Etola Rolland this week.
The announcement of Chaplain Jones returning to DeKalb for a Sunday night address at the Armory under the Elks Lodge drew a large, enthusiastic crowd. Dr. William B. Owen principal of the Chicago Normal College delivered a timely address at the Normal school on The War and Education. He urged universal education and professional preparation for teachers, linking civic efficiency to thorough training and discipline. Field Marshal Haig reports raiding along the Flanders front and northern Picardy with unusually heavy artillery. Lens Givency and Ypres areas saw raids and many enemy casualties. French detachments near Montdidier and Oise took 20 prisoners. Americans on the Marne broke the German salient with heavy losses and 800 killed 5,000 wounded. Australian patrols crossed the Maine front and prisoners were taken. Gas attacks were used in Lorraine and the Woevre district.
S. E. Bradt of DeKalb state highway chief will discuss the $60,000,000 bond issue at a good roads convention in Yorkville. The Kane and Kendall counties automobile clubs sponsor the program with an afternoon and evening agenda and strong local interest is reported.
Reuben Day son of Mr and Mrs John G Davy of this city was among four North Western dental school graduates chosen by the president to travel to Fort Oglethorpe Georgia for special government work in oral surgery They enlisted in government service about three months ago but completed their courses first before active duty.
Citizens report repeated calls to the police over chickens of all sizes running loose. Officials urge residents to keep fowl confined within yards and coops to protect gardens during the growing season.
Leo Mortenson, a former De Kalk baker, is resting comfortably at the city hospital after an accident at work on an old Dillenback plow. He fell and was dragged under the wheel, tearing one ear and fracturing the skull. the team did not stop for several minutes.
The new Pord service station and garage at the corner of First and Lincoln Highway nears completion. Inside work by painters and decorators continues while exterior grading proceeds. When finished it will rank among the best equipped garages in the region.
Sergeants Harry Olson Frank O Malley and Truesdale from Camp Grant have assisted in a large Red Cross drive at Washburn. They have demonstrated bayonet work, giving Washburn residents a glimpse of what our soldiers may do in combat.
Sycamore will host a nine o'clock departure for twenty nine county youths to attend the Sweeney automobile school in Kansas City Missouri. The gathering includes ten DeKalb entrants and a large local quota of enlistments. A program precedes the train at the courthouse with eight o'clock start. Killed in action include J. L. Mc Avoy and John Stevens on. Died of wounds include Walter Stelmaszek. Wounded severely include N. M. Markus. Missing in action include Lieut. O. J. Kendall.
Germany’s response to the American proposal for a prisoners conference at Berne has not been satisfactory. Further inquiry continues and officials say talks may still be arranged. The conference would cover prisoner treatment and possible exchanges.
Dispatches report Vienna bread shortages spurring a general strike and rioting with cavalry deployed and martial law expected. Protests spread to Neustadt and provinces as bread rations fall and bakers are looted. In Berlin and Hamburg crowds face military police with several deaths and arrests.
Michael Hannon, long known resident, has been ill for several days and is now in serious condition. His sister Mrs. W. Calhoun of Chicago arrived today to assist during his illness.

The program features Sousa Stars and Stripes, Keler Bela Lustspiel overture, Italian Nights Waltz, Chimes of Normandy, For You a Rose cornet solo, Bowl of Pansies, Hesitation Blues, King Rose medley, American Patrol, and the Star Spangled Banner.
Executive Chairman Frank Whit Stove calls all committee members to a 7 45 pm city hall gathering to plan a large DeKalb celebration and demonstration on July 4. Discussion covers venue options between the Normal auditorium and the Normal campus. Mr and Mrs J R Shephard of Chicago are guests at the Spickerman home.
Preliminary to a possible war move the state department asked the Spanish embassy and Swedish legation to probe reports of Turkish violations at the American consulate and hospital in Tabriz. The inquiries engage Spain and Sweden due to their protection roles for interests in the city.
Corporal Mark Simpson of Company A 129th United States infantry in France has set a sharpshooter record with 81 hits out of 100 at Camp Logan Houston Texas before the regiment sailed for France. He is a relative of the late General U S Grant.
