Repairing Old Cement On Lincoln Highway West Of Malta
Work began this week to tear out sections of the twelve foot Lincoln Highway cement west of Malta to repair a slab battered for fifteen years by growing traffic. Harley Self leads the state crew noting changes in cementing methods since early days of Haii surfaced roads. E. Bradt of the First National Bank cites seed miles as crudely constructed, thanks to Portland Cement Co and Lincoln Highway Association cooperation. The section west of Malta was the state’s first cement piece outside municipal limits, funded by Portland Cement Co donations and local grading by township and county costs. A test mile laid between DeKalb and Sycamore preceded later expansion, a smooth job with early placement difficulties.
