Bobby Jones captured the British Open at St Andrews with a 285 total, the lowest 72 hole score in a major. He led through the final round as crowds cheered, carrying the titleholder on the clubhouse steps amid jubilant scenes.
American golfer Bobby Jones leads as the British Open favorite after 18 holes today finishing in 73 to bring his total to 213. His third round rose above the prior two but delighted a large gallery that followed him throughout the morning.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 PM from the First Lutheran church for Andrew E. Nelson a longtime DeKalb resident who died suddenly in Chicago. Rev. E W Magnusson will conduct the service with burial in Fairview cemetery. Nelson, born July 17 1865 in Westergotland Sweden, lived in DeKalb and Chicago, built DeKalb's first fire wagon, and left a wife Ida Amalia Gustafson with four daughters and three grandchildren. He spent weekends in DeKalb with family.
A surge of rioters attacked near Vienna parliament, burning the court house and destroying justice ministry records. Police fired, injuring over 100 as crowds gathered at Schmerling Square and the palace of justice while socialists clashed with anti-socialists amid escalating violence.
In Franklin county circuit court the state opens witness testimony to prove the guilt of Charlie Birger Art Newman and Ray Hyland in the Joe Adams murder case. Sheriff Pritchard and Sheriff Coleman lead the procession describing the scene and Shady Rest, Adams home, and four bodies found after the bombing.
In Kenosha Wisconsin July 15 the coroner s jury postponed its inquiry into the deaths of Joseph Conforti and Mrs Hazel Van Patten after translators differed on an Italian note left by Conforti to Van Patten. The jury will wait for outside translators to verify contents amid concerns over possible misdirection by local Indians. Bodies were found in a Silver Lake cottage Wednesday.
Forty four students graduate at noon from the State Teachers College completing the first term of summer school. Dr. J C Brown, new college president, gave a ten minute address about wealth and right living. Five earned Bachelor of Education, including four from the city. DeKalb juniors Ruth Brock Mary Henning Florence Louthan Paul Ryan Walter Swarthout also received diplomas along with numerous other graduates from various towns.
Honolulu reports grave fears for Ernest Smith and Emory Bronte after their monoplane City of Oakland crashed attempting a land on the Pacific Ocean near Maui. Fuel shortage forced a sea landing after 19 hours aloft. Army Bird of Paradise ready for rescue support while search efforts continue with navy and coast guard coordination.
Indiana Governor Ed Jackson parolees George Dale editor of the Muncie Post Democrat after a ninety day sentence for contempt of court. Trustees at Putnamville State Farm recommended parole under usual conditions with no remission of fine. Dale’s appeals to state and federal supreme courts failed. Separate note: Stephenson’s 1924 primary spending, $73,216, was disclosed by the Indianapolis Times in a copy of a letter to Jackson.
Hollywood California July 15 40 An anxious careworn mother kept an all night vigil beside a rose covered bungalow awaiting news of her son lost somewhere on the Pacific off Hawaii. Mrs Emory B Bronte Sr mother of the navigator of the City of Oakland remained cheerful and expressed confidence he would be rescued after a fitful night with little rest. She questioned a United Press representative for the latest news.
Detroit July 19 postpones the Sammy Mandell versus Phil McGraw lightweight championship due to rain. The bout will be held tomorrow night.
Roberto Torrez, the slender Mexican condemned with two accomplices for the murder of Deputy Warden Peter Klein, asked Coroner O Neill to bury him wearing a bright red necktie. The coroner promised the request would be honored.
Rock Island, Ti July 15 Authorities say James Grosswhite 64 shot and killed his 20 year old bride of a few days then killed himself. The bodies were found in their home after neighbors reported hearing a quarrel. No motive was established.

A massive blaze at the North Western chutes last night destroyed east side structures and about 300 tons of coal. A leaking gasoline pipe from storage to the engine pit caused fumes that exploded, injuring Angelo Aire who was burned on one hand. Firefighters struggled as hydrants were distant and water supply limited, with reconstruction planned to move chutes east and rebuild with concrete for safety.
