Dayton at Big Trial Scopes Case Opens in Tennessee
The Dayton Tenn trial of Professor John T Scopes began with national attention centering on education and scientific theory. Judge Raulston presided as Scopes faced charges for teaching evolution from a textbook approved by the school board. The defense argued evolution does not deny divine creation and urged that scientific subjects be taught despite controversy. If convicted Scopes faces a fine and possible appeal with Bryan and the prosecution led by Frank M Thompson.
