FORGERY CHARGE LEADS TO ARREST NEAR MARONGO
Harry Sarbaugh 35 once resident of this city and former farm resident near DeKalb was arrested at his Union home near Marengo early today on forging checks and disposing of hotel property. State Patrol Officer Nelson led the arrest aided by Elmendorf, Larson and local county officials. Warrants allege a confidence game entanglement at Sycamore where he was taken. He has prior arrests for unlawful check writing but avoided penalties. Charges cite forging several checks payable to him totaling 1050 and 500 with signer names Carr and Miller, and a mortgaged Chrysler trade plus a new Ford disposition.

Alfred Strand of Milan township died in Waterman hospital this morning of pneumonia. He entered the hospital about 48 hours before death. He was about 70 years old and had lived in the community for many years. Further obituary details and funeral arrangements could not be obtained at this time.

Dixon Couple Injured in Accident Near DeKalb
Mr and Mrs Ben Shaw of Dixon were injured when their Buick struck by a truck near the state school for boys last evening about 7 00 o clock. Mrs Shaw suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to St Charles hospital before being sent home. Mr Shaw escaped serious injury and the car sustained heavy damage. Both are connected with the Dixon Telegraph.

Many Ships Have Booze Brings Navy-Style Crackdown at Sea
New London and coast guard officials said about 150 ships ferried liquor from foreign ports to the northeastern Atlantic. A holiday drive netted four ships and about 25,000 quarts of whiskey wine brandy and champagne seized. Three men were killed in the Black Duck seizure 24 guardsmen court martialled for liquor influence 15 for pilfering from Flor Del Mar and 10 others pleaded guilty.

Sugar tariff secrecy probe links lobbyists to White House
Washington officials opened evidence in the senate lobby investigating committee showing sugar lobbyists obtained confidential tariff information. A letter from William H. Baldwin to Junior Owens described highly confidential data from R L Purdon, sugar expert at the commerce department, who was working on a sliding scale tariff for the White House and Senator Smoot. Baldwin had testified he received 2500 dollars a month for publicity and the memo urged secrecy about Purdon’s findings. Another letter suggested Baldwin’s firm also got confidential tariff commission material. Baldwin had sought to interest former Governor Smith of New York.
