State executive reports at Cham paign meeting cites highway commissioner's claim that road sign ads will be removed within a year or two and notes government data suggesting few drivers read them. A survey plan will station officials to test ad payoffs on main state roads amid calls to curb signs at curves to reduce accidents.
Prof Clyde Lyon from the state teachers college discusses proportional representation and its citywide adoption in Cleveland and other towns. He will speak to the Woman's club at the Elks club Friday at 2 29 and lead an election demonstration. Candidates for DeKalb alderman include Jane Adams Jeannette Rankin Dean Kinley William Dever Senator Essington John Devine and Bishop Anderson. St Mary's Benevolent Ass'n hosts euchre night tomorrow at eight with cake served.
Elks lodge members have prepared two dinner committees for this evening at the Innovation venue. Three hundred guests are planned for the first sitting with additional entertainment on the first floor of the Illinois Wonder Restaurant. After dinner, dancing will follow. Members are urged to bring their ladies for what is expected to be a large turnout.
County Superintendent of Highways A. R. Russell prepares his road program for spring. He aims to cover more roads than last year, with plans ready for the committee’s approval. Winter work included overhauling trucks and machinery. gravel pit prep near Cortland corners is ready for use.
The DeKalb Poultry Association treasurer reports the chicken show held in the Second Street garage during Farmers Institute week broke even financially. Though not a financial success, it drew local farmers into the association’s work, boosting involvement. New York actress Wallie Belasco Martin, once with the show Very Good Eddie and reportedly a second cousin of David Belasco, drank liquid shoe polish in her Riverside Drive apartment and died before help arrived. Former Attorney General A Mitchell Palmer will testify before the Senate investigating committee in Washington on Feb 28 to explain his role in the McLean and Fall telegrams and his participation in the oil scandal probe. The panel aims to trace how measures were taken to delay testimony and to determine Palmer's involvement with McLean. Meanwhile Goodyear adds a Winchester Potato Chip line to the plant in Winchester augmenting production and staff as demand remains strong.
Mrs. Hiram Ellwood aged about 91 died after a brief illness yesterday in DeKalb. She lived with her daughter Mrs D D Brown on North Third street for years and was known for a long life of usefulness. Services will be held Saturday at 2 30 from Mrs Browns home conducted by Dr B Barrett Evans with burial at Fairview. Granddaughters Zaida Brown and Mrs George T Ragsdale and the Ragsdale family from Louisville Ky are among survivors.
Road conditions worsen as thaws persist making country routes near DeKalb and Malla road soft. Vehicles stall during warmth, with several machines unable to pass yesterday.
The Greer chauffeur case involving Mable Normand’s chauffeur Horace A. Greer on charges of shooting and attempting to kill Kentland S. Dines was postponed again today until March 18.

P S Slater of Hinckley was found dead in his bed this morning. He had been a progressive farmer near Hinckley and remained active in business despite illness. He leaves a wife and daughter Mrs Ralph Ramer and sisters Mrs Eva Benson of LaGrange and Mrs A J Coster of Lake Delavan. Funeral services will be from the home, with Rev Roy Crofter of the Methodist church presiding, burial at Greenwood cemetery.
The February DeKalb county grand jury reported completion of work and returned four indictments before Judge William J. Fulton. Walter Fritsch of Sandwich faces prohibition charges, James Lewis f of Sycamore charged with teeny, Thomas L. Barnetté and William Jones accused of larceny and receiving stolen property, and Jack Noe charged with a confidence game. Bonds set at $1,000 each. one case reenacted. Fritsch was arrested November 7, 1923 after a raid alleging possession of intoxicants. Continues on page eight.
