A military ball is announced for Wednesday March 4 at the Armory under the DeKalb company of militia. The event aims to raise funds for emergency needs as preparations for the sixth regiment continue. Tickets are one dollar, with proceeds supporting militia activities and morale.
United Press report from Washington states Sen. Frelinghuysen of New Jersey introduced a resolution asking the alien property custody office be investigated. He cites alleged secrecy in which A Mitchell Palmer has run the office. The resolution was referred to the Commerce Commission.
Ed Hitchcock is reported to be seriously ill and absent from work. The illness is described as temporary with a likely return soon, though no exact date is given.
Washington, D. C., Feb. 26. All state governors and 100 mayors were invited to a White House conference on March 3 and 4 to discuss labor and business, with a focus on reconstruction work and the unemployment problem.
A new floor is being laid this week in the basement of the Swedish Mission church. Because of the work, there will be no meetings this week at the church except choir practice which will be held on the usual evening.
Deputy Collector Feldman to discuss new revenue bill changes affecting 1918 income tax. Smietanka notes single exemptions of 1000 and 2000 for married or heads of families remain, with 6 percent on net income over exemptions up to 4000 and 12 percent above that. Alien non residents with U.S. property taxed at 12 percent. For 1919 and later rates fix at four and eight percent.
President Wilson plans a national appeal to rally support for the league of nations before sailing to France. He may speak in New York on March 4 or 5 and hold White House talks with congressional leaders to push vital legislation before adjournment.
Berlin Feb 26 dispatches state a coalition government in Austria is assured with the Social Democrats and Christian Socialists agreeing to cooperate if the latter do not oppose union with Germany. The Christian Socialists deny monarchist charges.
Dustin Farnum stars in The Light of Western Stars at the Star playhouse for a two day engagement opening tonight. The western drama, based on Zane Grey, features lavish scenery and special music by the Star Orchestra. Performances begin at 7:30 with adult prices 28 cents and children 11 cents including war tax.
Madrid reports Bolshevists controlled Lisbon since Saturday with battles in the streets. Censorship delayed details and authorities refused to recognize the soviet. Barricades, police and private banks targeted. a Monarchist prisoner named Camacho was killed in the street during transport.
Washington officials say nearly 35000 in bribe money and valuable entertainments formed the price in the third naval district slacker scandal. Five persons are under arrest with more deten tions expected. civilians are believed involved but names will be sent to the justice department for prosecution.
A local hen on North Second Street has hatched five chicks under the porch of the Lincoln Watson Place. The tale, though sounding unlikely, is being shared this week as the birds settle in for spring.
Members of Company M sixth regiment Illinois Reserve Militia to use Armory first floor one night weekly and club rooms upstairs after lease overhaul. Shower baths reading room and conveniences to be added. Armory arms arriving from Springfield soon. limited slots open for new entrants. DeKalb Trust stays open for tax payments through March. At the Paris talks the Preliminary settlement with Germany is being prepared. The German affairs committee reports rapid progress and asks reparations members to submit damage estimates. Discussion on responsibility for the war proceeds as territorial issues move toward adjustment. Irish question may come up. President Wilson's Boston speech is praised by conferees.
Mr and Mrs H S Ramer report their son Henry has been stationed at a naval training camp in the northwest and expects to cross the ocean this week. He has been assigned to duty on the U S S Charleston and will travel to France after a brief stay in Brooklyn. This is his first voyage across and he plans to share many stories upon returning on furlough.
DeKalb notes Miss Margaret Wintringer will address a union gathering at the Baptist church next Sunday evening. A journalist and lecturer of note, she has spoken widely and will likely discuss postwar topics after returning from abroad.
President Ebert supports creating a national workers soviet as the lower house to handle industrial questions while Reichstag sovereignty remains. Bundesrat could be abolished to allow the soviet, Scheidemann hesitates, and leaders expect a decision soon amid mounting political tension. Also reported, WeimarNational Assembly limits army strength to one third of prewar levels, with 35,089 officers and 769,938 men in 1914.
Senator Cummins of Iowa forecast popular disapproval of the proposed league of nations and urged a substitute plan he called the international compact. He described the proposal as destructive and unjust, saying it would be rejected in a storm of obloquy when Americans fully grasp its meaning and consequences. He outlined a pact of arbitration, nonwar until discussion, and ostracism for noncompliant nations, plus disarmament.
President Wilson may be asked to settle NW telephone workers’ strike per International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers executive committee decision. Tonight and tomorrow Armory theater in DeKalb offers vaudeville including Carlotta the human dragon, The Singing Three, Leela Mae and Co, Marie and Eddie, Willie Zimmerman in The Men of the Hour impersonations, and a Pathe travel film with Mrs Reynolds’ five piece orchestra. Admission 39 cents adults, 26 cents children. tax deadlines noted. Pay taxes now at De Kalb Trust and Savings Bank. all personal taxes due March 1.
The Democratic national committee elected Homer S. Cummings of Connecticut as chairman to succeed Vance McCormick. McCormick resigned to serve as adviser to the American delegation at the peace conference. Cummings will launch the 1920 campaign with nationwide tours to meet state leaders. J. Bruce Kramer of Butte, Montana and Samuel B. Amidon of Wichita, Kansas were elected vice chairmen signaling a vigorous midwest and west push.
In DeKalb the new revenue bill will raise prices on many items. Stores plan to install two cash registers, one for Uncle Sam and one for their own use, as taxes apply to shoes hats dresses and more. Clerks and customers anticipate higher costs for clothing, hosiery, and tobacco as the law takes effect.
A ballroom event at the Armory features Waltz and Two Step dancing tonight from 10:00 to 12:00. It offers a social dance program with music and instruction for participants.
William Hale Thompson, Republican, and Robert M. Sweitzer, Democrat, won party nominations in Chicago primaries. Thompson led over Olson by 39,946 votes with Merriam runner up, and Sweitzer led Carey by 60,983 votes. Unofficial totals show Thompson 123,976 Republican and Sweitzer 109,177 Democratic with other totals as listed.
