DeKalb merchants advertise a Golden Rule sale for Wednesday February 28, featuring spring arrivals, low prices, and extensive participation across stores. The event aims to attract bargain hunters despite weather and road conditions, with many firms joining for the first time and highlighting special prices on spring merchandise.
DeKalb voters will decide aldermanic races in five wards at the city primary to determine nominees for the forthcoming election. Polls open 6:00 am to 5:00 pm with contests in the third ward Republican slate on aldermen.
The inquest into the death of Mrs. Whitside, tied to Howard Whitside of Sycamore, was postponed for ten days due to his critical condition. It was set for Geneva at 10:00 this morning. Further details are on the Sycamore page of tonight’s Chronicle.
About 125 pupils from Downers Grove schools and many friends attended the funeral for Katherine Egan who died Friday in Downers Grove. Services were at St Marys Church at 9:09 am with Rev J A Solon officiating. Burial followed in St Marys Cemetery. The Downers Grove schools closed for the day in her honor. Her sister Miss Mary Egan teaches in Downers Grove.
Moscow on February 24 marked the twelfth anniversary of the Red Army with a display of disciplined troops. Kremlin officials urged maximum preparedness against perceived capitalist aggression. Leaders warned imperialists, fascists, and emigres were plotting a new attack as Western powers held naval talks seen as anti Soviet. In St Louis Zionist delegates protested persecution in Soviet Russia while a Palestine fund was allocated. In Minsk, Soviet officials stated the fourteen rabbis arrested faced no imminent danger, with most released.
In Crigleraville Va on February 24 a remote Blue Ridge school opened with ten year old Ray Burraker raising the American flag. His grandfather and grandmother walked miles through mud to attend as about 20 children arrived early for the ceremony. teacher Christine West, a Berea College graduate, led a room with desks maps and a world globe.
Six persons injured when three cars collided about three miles west of town on the Lincoln Highway Saturday night. Two serious injuries include Miss Marcurite Buckaloo and Harrison Littler with pelvic fractures. Mrs Welsh suffered skull laceration and facial injuries. children Barbara and Priscilla Welsh also hurt. Paul Nehring Jr and companion escaped with minor bruises as the Devize coupe struck by Sittler’s Dodge and then by the Welsh Ford. Police described dual collision sequence and evasive maneuvers leading to the ditch edge.
Chicago officials launched a drive to raise 74000000 to clear salaries for city county and school workers. Philip R Clarke urged small earners to buy warrants from 500 to larger denominations calling it essential to relieve teachers policemen firemen and other public employees. He expected funds soon though no exact payment date was given.
Hollywood mourns Mabel Normand, famed screen comedienne, dies at the Pottenger Sanitarium Monrovia after a long tuberculosis battle. She had long hoped to learn who killed William Desmond Taylor, telling detectives she believed the slayer would be found before her death. Her passing, at 2 25 p m, leaves Hollywood in sorrow as her husband Lew Cody was unavailable.
Unsettled conditions with rain likely in the east tonight and early Tuesday while the west may stay drier. Cold air moves in Tuesday with colder readings focused on the west and south portions tonight.
Springfield Feb 24 A wild off year primary scramble begins for state and national nominations. Republicans lead the bidding for U S Senate with Deneen Mee Cormick and others in the field. Democrats show a smaller slate. Twenty three Republicans remain after withdrawals. two Democrats listed. Candidates hail from Chicago and across the state with many names and districts in contention.
Candidates who filed petitions will continue their campaigns for votes. Saturday was the last day to withdraw, or keep a candidate out of the race. The primary is April 9 with campaigns in all county sections. The race centers on sheriff and county judge positions.
Washington February 24 Hoover and Treasury head Mellon warned congressional leaders that government expenses must stay within the 50 million dollar budget next fiscal year or financial trouble looms. They urged eliminating all proposed expenditures beyond the budget except veterans disability increases.
Charles Evans Hughes became the eleventh chief justice of the United States in a brief solemn ceremony. He was sworn in in a closed session with the justices and again in the Senate wing courtroom, as Chief Justice Taft resigned amid illness. Hughes, 68 in April, pledged equal justice in a lifetime position, with Taft remaining ill in his Wyoming Avenue home.
Vernon Vermelond was arrested in Somonauk on a driving while intoxicated charge and a liquor transport offense. He pleaded guilty, received a $100 fine plus costs, ten days in jail on the driving charge, and one year probation on the liquor charge. City Marshal Richard Poplin detained him after several minor crashes as he roamed the streets. Vermelond listed Sheridan as home and farming as occupation.
Mrs Katherine Gropp of Sycamore died suddenly at 1 00 am from apoplexy. Born in Germany March 21 1854 she came to the United States at 26 settling first in Dixon later moving to Sycamore 42 years ago. She married Charles Gropp in 1884. he died in 1913. Surviving are six children eight grandchildren and a niece. Funeral at St John s Lutheran Church Wednesday at 2 09 pm with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mrs Al G Scott of Fresno California sister of Mrs H G Belding Mrs S W Holmes and Mrs M D Allen of this city died Saturday morning after two years of failing health Funeral services set for tomorrow afternoon She is survived by her husband three sisters and three brothers J A Burgess of Chicago Ben E Milan E Burgess of Stanwood Iowa Mrs Scott lived in California for over fifteen years and was well known in De Kalb with many mourners here.
Immanuel Lutheran church will have Concordia Teachers College faculty fill Sunday pulpits for three to four weeks until Rev Erdmann Frenk can resume services. Lenten services will be held each Thursday during Lent with Rev Linne meier of Rochelle supplying the pulpit. Rev Frenk slowly regaining health after pneumonia but remains too weak to return to work.
A Milwaukee area electric train collided with a freight engine at a North City crossing in Kenosha at 11 p.m. Eleven people died and about 109 were injured. The southbound train, carrying 139 passengers, struck a sedan driven by Norman Shinners of Milwaukee, then slid into a long freight train. Fires spread as rescuers rushed in. hospitals admitted dozens of wounded.
St Louis police disclosed that a chain store operator in Pershall and his family paid 40000 dollars to kidnappers to secure the release of a hostage. Granite City realtor Blockburger, later arrested, said the gang negotiator pressured for 50000 then settled at 46000. The abduction had begun Wednesday and Pershall was found after the payment in St Louis near the Cuckoo gang’s area.
