Funeral services for John Howard Balis 84 who died yesterday afternoon at 211 South Fifth Street will be held Thursday at two o'clock from his home Rev F M Webster will conduct the services burial will be in Berry Umberly Cortland cemetery with Masonic rites at the grave Mr Balis a longtime Cortland resident came to the county in 1875 lived on a Cortland farm until 1886 then moved to the city He was born January 31 18412 in Benson Vermont to John and Ruth Pratt Balis He married Frances E Howard September 13 1864 in Benson Vermont Mrs Balis died December 11 1925 After her death Mr Balis health declined He joined Masonic orders early and was Master Mason in St Pauls Lodge Brandon VI He was a Congregational church member and choir worker He is survived by a niece Mrs J Howard Wheaton of Pittsford VI and a nephew Judson rd of St Pauls School Concord NH with Mrs Wheaton caring for him.

Music lovers of DeKalb and vicinity will hear Axel Frichot Carlson bass with pianist Mrs. Glenn Reynolds and harpist Edna Wheeler Ballard in a concert at the state teachers college auditorium tomorrow evening. Carlson, recently back from four years study abroad, plans to return to the old country to pursue operatic training. He has a wide repertoire including Italian and German numbers and will perform difficult operatic selections. Haish Will Gifts DeKalb Institutions Major Library Hospital
Jacob Haish died at 99 and his will directs most of his estate to public and charitable bodies in DeKalb. A $150,000 Jacob Haish Memorial Library and a $100,000 Haish Memorial Hospital are planned, with other gifts including $25,000 to Masons and annual $1,000 bequests to Anna Anderson and $2,000 to Miss Ellen Carlson. The trust runs five years after the survivor’s death, with trustees empowered to manage and invest the estate and select a site and plans for the library.
