Mansfield couple freed in Hoppe death acquittal
Morris and Jessie Mansfield of Peoria were acquitted in a Peoria county circuit court verdict on the death of Clarence Hoppe from alcohol poisoning. The jury deliberated about three hours and this acquittal may lead to dropping remaining indictments for other poison alcohol deaths. Charles Carlson a 55 year old Kirkland shoemaker turned odd job man was found living in deserted shelters and a box car. He carried deposit books showing several thousand dollars in two banks. Sleepers Receive Midnight Suppers From Local Groups
Sleepers at the police station were fed two meals last night. The Congregational church provided the first meal and the Knights of Columbus supplied the second. Twelve sleepers ate, with eight men showing unusually large appetites. The Knights of Pythias also contributed, leaving a sizable amount. About two gallons of mulligan and 45 sandwiches were shared. the eight men finished all and drank two or three cups of coffee.
