DeKalb residents await the semi annual Dollar Day event with merchants advertising wide price cuts. Varied lines from department stores to groceries join the sale aimed at maximizing buying power during late winter. Shoppers are urged to study this Chronicle issue and plan Saturday expeditions for maximum discounts.
Dr W Nelson of DeKalb spoke to 45 farmers at the high school meeting under the Future Farmers of America about bovine infectious diseases. He warned the disease causes high losses, with tests showing twenty percent reactors in some states and an annual loss around 59 million dollars.
About 1 45 this afternoon two cars collided in front of the College Inn on the West Lincoln Highway. Paul Guillickson of this city and Mr Tazwell of Kingston drove westbound. No injuries were reported though both vehicles were towed away.
Mayfield township farmer Erick Bridger was found unconscious on the garage floor Monday afternoon. He had been working on a car and was overcome by engine fumes. His condition today remained serious but slightly improved. He moved the car outdoors and pulled it around the yard before collapsing. He initially appeared to be dead.
All DeKalb county elementary and high school teachers meet at State Teachers College on Friday for the regular DeKalb association session. Schools will dismiss so instructors may attend. Prominent out of town speakers include A. L. Whittenberg Dr. W. D. Henderson and Prof. Fred Sorenson.
Merle Stiles an eighteen year old inmate at the county jail in Sycamore since last November escaped from the kitchen during 6 15 PM. A trustee Frank Cairo of Chicago and Turnkey William Farr were present. Cairo did not attempt to flee. Deputies searched roads and nearby towns all night and into today with reports of a sighting in Virgil seeking a coat and cap. Stiles described as 5 6 tall 170 pounds with clipped hair wearing khaki shirt and trousers and a sleeveless sweater. Cairo serving a one year sentence in DeKalb county jail expected release in two to three weeks.
Fifteen high school bands including DeKalb High School will take part in the district contest at Rockford on April 3 and 4. Rockford authorities arrange the two day event with bands from Rockford Streator Freeport Byron Fulton and Capron. Over 700 musicians will be present and visiting players will stay with Rockford families during the contest.
Archaeologists led by Alan Rowe of the University of Pennsylvania report uncovering multiple ancient layers at Beisan Beit Shean Beisan mound 55 miles north of Jerusalem. They identify Byzantine churches a Graeco Roman temple Philistine temples of Ashtoreth and Dagon and a Canaanite sanctuary linking Beisan to biblical history. The mound shows eight city levels with successive civilizations and has long connected Beisan with various conquerors from Greeks Romans Byzantines to Crusaders.
London reports from February reveal Japan’s memorandum to the naval conference calling for reduced battleship tonnage from 35 000 to 25 000 tons and 14 inch guns, an age cap of 26 years for carriers over 10 000 tons, and continued submarine force with a 13 year sub life. It supports a mixed approach to limitation by total tonnage or by class, while opposing abolition of submarines and urging defensive policy alongside Kellogg pact constraints.
Armenian speaker Donald Kuberserian discussed Armenian school conditions sponsored by Americans during a stop in the city. He spoke to upper grade pupils after a Sunday address at the Congregational church. Kuberserian shared thrilling experiences and was described as an engaging speaker.
Police from Darmstadt reinforced in Ruesselsheim to curb a communist led strike at the General Motors Opel auto works. About 200 agitators from Frankfurt and Offenbach distributed leaflets, damaged machinery, and five saboteurs were arrested as 60,000 marks in wages were promised to workers who stayed at their jobs.
Illinois forecast says mostly cloudy and colder tonight and Friday with possible snow in the extreme southeast portion tonight.
In Chicago police rounded up the O'Donnell gang leaders amid a large crackdown on gunmen. Five reputed chiefs sat at a private table in a West Madison cafe when officers entered. Two revolvers hung on wall pegs, and other suspects were questioned as part of the city crackdown on organized crime.
County Treasurer Rosa Hanson announced that residents can pay their 1925 taxes in three weeks. Hanson, visiting the county banks, said deputy tax collectors will be appointed in each bank to receive tax money, continuing the usual practice.
Trinity Lutheran church at Ninth and Grove streets will host a three day mission meeting starting Friday evening and continuing all day Saturday and Sunday. Several speakers are scheduled to address the congregation and friends. A large attendance is hoped for.
Former Chief Justice William Howard Taft slept well at his Washington home with improved condition reported by attendants. He rested undisturbed through the night and seemed better this morning.
Rev. Robert Van Meigs spoke at the First Baptist church on Abraham Lincoln linking bravery in war and peace to Lincoln's character. He discussed Lincoln’s books, his education struggles, and his admiration for Washington. The children enjoyed the talk, a sleight of hand, and lively songs, with emphasis on Lincoln’s body theft rumor and a note on a 1565 New York Herald issue.
