Prisoners Kill Guards at Western Penitentiary Riot
Two prison officials were killed when 100 convicts escaped during gas explosions at the Western Penitentiary in Pittsburg. The yard sergeant John R. Coax and assistant deputy warden John Peiper died. rioters hurled stones and fought guards as police and detectives rushed to restore order. Riot broke out after the blasts. fire, tear gas, and water streams were used to quell the violence. About 400 inmates were inside the prison at the time.
