Noted Educator Brown Struck By Taxi In Chicago

Dr J Stanley Brown 58 president of Northern Illinois State Teachers College DeKalb Ill survived a taxi collision on Madison Street. He was knocked into the streetcar path and suffered bruises but no serious injuries. After first aid he rode the train home and is expected to stay in bed a week or two.

French Extend Hold On German Lines

French forces reinforced their grip on German rail links to Switzerland over the weekend, tightening control of the Frankfurt Basel line and the Stuttgart road across the Black Forest. Troops moved from the Saale bridgehead to secure two towns near the Black Forest as German reports of violence emerged including a German child shot in Duisiers and nine killed near Mainz. Disturbances by Communists in the Ruhr were quelled by French machine gun fire.

DuPage to Back DeKalb Pick for Federal Bench

DuPage county central committee plans to back DeKalb selections for the federal bench as Kane, DuPage, and DeKalb counties drum toward the Geneva convention. Tidal Wave Hits Hawaini Islands Killing and Missing

Reports from Honoluiun Herald Telegram describe a tidal wave sweeping the windward Hawaini islands. It lists four confirmed Japanese deaths and up to 12 missing, with seven bodies recovered in one island town. Rilo’s principal streets were flooded and wreckage littered the area while residents fled to the streets. An earthquake hundreds of miles away in the Pacific is blamed for the wave.

Weather permitting DeKalb and Sycamore Odd Fellows plan to attend the district meeting in Genoa this week with ritual work expected from the two lodges drawing a large turnout. A telegraphic Chicago report states J E Browman electrician filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition with liabilities at 2207 and assets 5647.

Burns to Death When Oil Stove Is Tipped Over

Mrs Eliza beth Jorden Wilson aged 84 a wealthy recluse was burned to depth today when fire destroyed her Chicago home. The body lay on a stairway beneath a pile of laundry where the coroner said she slept. Widow of James Wik sot a noted attorney from a century ago. Fire traced to overturned lamp with heated oil and candles used after quarrel with her housekeeper.

Price War Slashes Bread Prices In Chicago Stores

In Chicago on Feb 4 bread prices dropped as two chain groups competed. One group sold standard 16 ounce loaves for five cents, the other for four cents. Other stores charged ten cents. Additionally Minnie makes her debut at the Star tonight with showtimes at 7:30 and 9:10.

Mrs H G Yelding received a telegram from Mayo Brothers hospital stating Mrs Wright Holmes and Mrs J D Ahern report Mrs Ahern underwent surgery Thursday. Message says operation successful and patient as well as can be expected. Also notes Star theater notice about a 7:30 ride to Riverboro and 7:30 and 9:10 showtimes.

Eight burned, four missing after Wichilla apartment fire

A serious fire in Wichilla Kansas today destroyed an apartment building. Eight persons were seriously burned while four others were unaccounted for. Nearly twenty people received emergency treatment as investigators assess the blaze and its causes.

Two Pioneer De Kalb Residents Die in Sudden Night Sickness

In DeKalb two families mourn after Amaziah Mowers and Eliza Saylor Taylor die Saturday night within an hour of each other. Mowers, 95, a Civil War veteran and G A R member, and Mrs. Eliza Taylor, aged 90, were healthy earlier in the evening. Mrs. Taylor had been chatting with family when she suddenly fell asleep and did not awaken. Mowers, long a respected resident, had endured illness all winter. his wife of 50 years cared for him until his death at home on East Lincoln Highway. He was born September 3, 1844 in Rome New York, served in the Seventh Illinois Cavalry, and was married to Matilda Goodison in 1867. Surviving relatives include his widow and a daughter Mabie Mowers, plus siblings and many friends. Funeral arrangements are outlined for tomorrow at the East Lincoln Highway home and the local Methodist church with services under Rev. B. Barrett Evans. Mrs. Eliza Taylor, a lifelong De Kalb resident, was born in Paris Kentucky 90 years ago and married to Square Taylor, who founded De Kalb’s first clothing store. Her passing follows a life of local involvement and community regard, with the report continuing on page eight.
