A public notice lists DeKalb county men who registered last year and failed to return questionnaires. It asks readers to help locate each person by notifying the exemption board, naming numerous names and addresses across DeKalb and nearby towns.
Mrs Ella Eggleson, a well known local resident, suffered serious bruises after falling down a flight of stairs in her daughter Mrs Hoyt’s Maple Park home. She had just arrived to spend a few days with her daughter and sustained injuries this morning with no broken bones reported.
Walter L. O'Brien announces his safe arrival in France by cablegram from Liew. Lieutenant O'Brien sailed from New York on January third and is now in France.
Restaurant owners urged to adopt non wheat breads and meatless days as part of wartime food administration. The plan bans wheat before 10 am and after 5 pm with daily meat and wheat restrictions. Week schedule includes meatless breakfasts and wheatless dinners, promoting victory bread and lamb as substitutes when possible.
Four laborers on the new Finnish Temperance hall on Eleventh street were injured when a scaffold collapsed. Victor Seppala and Gust Saari suffered serious injuries including sprains and a head wound, while the other two sustained minor injuries. They received medical care and returned home. none will receive workmen's compensation as the project is self-financed.
Mayor Wagley announced today that a large number of men have volunteered for the United States ship building service. He noted the government will employ many workers and urged all interested to file applications, with assurances they will be recognized. The four minute men are promoting the effort locally to ensure the city contributes its share of wartime labor.
De Kalb reports a high pneumonia surge with many ill residents. Parcel post carrier Carl Holmbeck is seriously ill at home on Pleasant street. Feller Durkee and Morris Kennedy of the fire station also suffer with pneumonia and grip illness.
United Press reports American troops hold part of a five mile front in Lorraine. The arc’s southern end centers near Badenville, west of Strasbourg, while the northern end reaches near Les Melines close to German territory, with Verdun and Metz cited as reference points.
Chicago, Feb 4. Evidence alleging an illegal combine of packers will go to the department of justice soon. Francis J. Heney, special FTC investigator, said he expects to obtain documentary evidence from packers attorneys. Vaults sealed to prevent removal of papers before a federal court decision expected today. Packers profits up about 50 percent since the war, while white retailers’ profits have declined.
Report notes stores in Sycamore allowed open on heatless Mondays with no restrictions on non permitted goods. Three DeKalb men tried to buy cigarettes here last Monday but were refused, then went to Sycamore to three different open stores and purchased all they wanted. DeKalb residents have followed the order, preventing sale of non permitted items today.
Deputy Collector Bristow in charge of township taxes reports a busy day as books opened many people visited to pay their taxes while banks opened for business giving collectors a brief respite to adjust records.
Lieut. Charles O'Connor of Aurora and a former DeKalb boy transferred to Camp Meigs from Camp Johnstone in Jacksonville Florida where he was attending school. He has been placed in acting charge of a company of 200 soldiers at Camp Meigs.
The Provost Marshal General requires all male German alien enemies aged 14 and up in the city to register this week under the city police chief. Registrants must provide four 3 by 3 inch photos, undergo extensive questioning, and have hand and fingerprinting. Noncompliance risks restraint, imprisonment, and detention for the duration.
Due to the extreme illness of editor Frank W. Greenaway, Chronicle readers are asked to be patient for a few days. The staff will strive to publish first but may err. A nurse attends him. only family may enter the sick room. Latest reports say he rests comfortably with little change in condition.
Federal tax collectors Carney and Burke left the post office yesterday for Kirkland. They will be in Kirkland for a few days then move to Genoa and other county areas to process tax returns. Residents who missed filing can visit local banks to complete blanks.
Secretary Emmerson requests the public donate old license plates for the Red Cross. Plates will be sold for aluminum. drop off at Snyder's smoke shop or The Chronicle for collection and processing.
DeKalb along with Sterling Rock Falls Morrison Mendota Dixon Sycamore and other cities will challenge a state public utilities commission order granting a temporary gas rate increase to Illinois Northern Utilities. The appeal heads to Sangamon County circuit court in Springfield for a final decision.
City taxi service Swanson's Livery and Taxi sets a 36 cent base fare effective March 1. Auto Taxi operator notes new pricing and provides contact by phone at 709. The figure appears in a brief local public notice.
A DeKalb Chronicle notice urges motorists to collect small aluminum license plate disks discarded with new tags. By gathering these disks and selling them for old aluminum, funds would be added to the Red Cross workshop drive. The Chronicle will accept disks and arrange sale proceeds for the Red Cross committee.
Electric street cars stalled again yesterday as high winds persisted. The Sycamore line halted since early yesterday with Aurora cars also struggling to pass. Right of way was cleared to Spring Valley, then had to be traversed again. Northwestern branch lines faced morning delays requiring a snow plow before Spring Valley service. Main Northwestern line saw minor slides from melting snow piled up to 15 to 20 feet.
George Evans Nelson, born September 28, 1916, died February 2 at home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nelson after a two week illness. Survived by parents two brothers Roy and Harold and many relatives. Funeral services with Rev G A Fahlund at the Nelson home this afternoon.

The weather man warned of freezing conditions during the night with reports of extreme cold. Some accounts claimed temperatures near 30 below, though day readings stayed around 18 to 20 below. Forecasts predict warmer temperatures by Tuesday and generally fair skies in Illinois with rising temperatures midweek.
Reports from Amsterdam say German strikes are easing with thousands returning to work on Sunday. In Berlin officials planned talks amid tightened security as military threats and court martial actions against strike leaders surfaced. Essen conditions described as normal while Krupp cited only 400 strikers.

An additional 74,500 drafted Americans will begin war training at camps February 23, according to the provost marshal general. This leaves 72,500 still to be called later, with the date for their call not yet set.
