Paris February 2 United Press reports Germany will not pay the $55 billion indemnity. If forced to refuse, seizure of German ports and duties collection were considered, possibly sparking armed clashes. Berlin dispatches quote Von Simons denouncing the demand and signaling unity across parties. Official circles indicate Germany expects American moral support and note the Brussels reparations conference set for February 7 has been postponed.
Washington Feb 2 The senate elections committee recount of 1918 Michigan senator election shows Newberry defeating Ford by 4 334 votes after adjustments. Official state tally had Newberry ahead by 7 567. Ford gained 264 votes while Newberry lost 2 969 during recount. The panel will report to the committee on privileges and elections and decide on further action.
Joe Oliver a long time patient at the city hospital was examined for sanity at Sycamore after several escape attempts including a leap from a passenger train near Maple Park. He was kept in custody, then sent to Elgin for treatment following the hearing. One of his brothers was returned to Portugal with a mental disorder.
We use the House appropriations committee reported today on Representative Gould New York calling on President Wilson for a complete detailed statement of expenditures of the two national defense funds of 100 million and 000 million allowed him during the war. Previous statements were incomplete. Mrs David Murphy was a guest at a card party at Mrs Byron Snow’s home in Sycamore Monday evening. Mrs Anna Collins is better after trouble with an infected finger.
The Illinois senate backed E C Mills Virginia memorial urging congressional mediation on pending world war soldier legislation. Governor Small’s health director choice Dr Isaac Rawlings was confirmed. A joint resolution seeks tax exemption for annual incomes under 5.10. Irish republic recognition and anti compulsory training measures were discussed. The legislature adjourned until tomorrow with 38 more bills added to the hopper.
Fire Chief McEvoy notes sixteen alarms in January, the highest monthly total since the department began. Many were safety calls for chimney and roof fires, with few costly incidents. if trend continues, city fire loss may rise in the year.
Reuben Johnson, a young laborer on the Edward Johnson farm near Malta, was badly burned and blinded briefly by a dynamite blast while stump blasting. A tree shielded him from the worst blast, and he is recovering with painful burns after receiving immediate care.
The Fordney emergency tariff bill failed to obtain the needed cloture, ending the attempt to halt debate. Democrats can now talk the bill to death, with a subsequent vote planned after which President Wilson would likely veto it. The tally was 36 to 0 in favor or against, indicating insufficient votes to overcome the veto.
Attorney Gene Palmer announced a revision of liquor permit rules at Leary of the Treasury’s request. The Bureau will redraw regulations to provision tariff in liquor under the Volstead act. About 1,800 wholesale permits remain outstanding granted for non beverage traffic.

A proposed appropriation of 90 million 100 to continue the building of naval dreadnaughts and other armament for the next fiscal year is recommended in naval appropriations bills reported to the House. The total bill equals 395 million 504 thousand 444 dollars and 23 cents, a decrease from the current year by 7.77 million 120 dollars 77 cents and 284 million 11 thousand 07 dollars 24 cents under navy officials request.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee favorably reported resolutions for investigations into American government activities in Liberia Haiti and Santo Domingo. The move aims to examine roles and policies in those regions and assess implications for U S foreign involvement.

L T Bi, a former church organist at Big Bo UL, confessed to beating his wife to death with a bommer. In Kossuth district court Judge LD F Coyte sentenced him to fifty years in the state prison after he recounted a sorrowful story and denied capital punishment. The defendant wept, claimed his wife was kind, and said there was nothing wrong in his relations with Miss Nellie Stevens. He is the son of Charles Benjamin, a Big Rock magistrate, and father of three.

He contends the legal system and courts spur lies through fear, insisting children are not naturally dishonest.
General John J. Pershing told the House Naval Affairs Committee in Washington that civilization may destroy itself unless progress toward world war ends. He urged united action among great powers and said the United States must press naval and army buildup until agreement is reached. Pershing backed a meeting of powers to discuss disarmament and expressed hope for success if President elect Harding calls a conference with all powers likely to respond.
British outposts on Persia's northwestern frontier repelled Bolshevik advance guards in a brief clash. British counter attacks killed 12 Bolsheviks and captured 27 with no British casualties, according to military advices from Teheran dated February 2.
At 7:50 a.m. the submarine L-1 was rammed by the pilot ship Philadelphia near the Overall Light Ship. Secretary Daniels was advised by the naval commandant at Philadelphia. All crew aboard the submarine are reported safe, though the vessel sustained heavy damage.
DeKalb welcomes a spring address at First Lutheran Church next Tuesday night February 8 by W E Johnson known as Pussyfoot Johnson. The London incident left him with a glass eye and he will speak on What I Can See Through My Glass Eye. Johnson, a Westerville Ohio resident, has since traveled widely speaking for temperance and sobriety.
The famed reformer Pussyfoot Johnson tours small cities after a national run in large venues. In DeKalb he will address residents at the First Lutheran Church under The World League Against Alcoholism and the Ministerial Association, with no admission fee and broad audience expectations.
The states attorney's office filed the final briefs and arguments for the prosecution in the Trainor bandit case. Trainor, one of the Somonauk auto bandits, has taken a writ of error to the Supreme Court with a decision expected at the April term. Ex-States Attorney Smith is assisting, while Poust prosecutes the appeal, aiming to keep Trainor in custody.
George N. Warde of Moosenear, general director of the Loyal Order of Moose, is set to speak at the DeKalb lodge Friday evening. An orator with a noted silver tongue, he helped shape political campaigns and once ran for mayor, losing by a single vote. The Moose organization has contracted him after learning of his abilities.
The city council last evening ratified a plan to relieve Locust street storm drains and drainage for Northern Illinois tracks and East Lincoln Highway paving. It includes using Anna Doze’s Dodge Addition lots as a small park to avoid costly deep cuts, securing an 18 inch tile from the drainage district, and contracting construction once weather allows.
G N Black of DeKalb lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose reports James J. Davis director general of Mooseheart has been named secretary of labor by President elect Warren G Harding. DeKalb lodge is asked to notify Rod ney Brandon and to write the president elect expressing appreciation for the Mooseheart leader’s cabinet appointment.
Last Saturday the Kalb County Milk Producers Association held its annual meeting at Sycamore. Members elected John Hallett president for the coming year with John S. Lindahl as secretary and George Brown and A. B. Welander as directors. Directors will attend the next annual meeting in Chicago where John Arison will serve as delegate.
