Merchants and farmers on South Fourth Street in DeKalb report the cement road and adjacent stretch over the railroad are passable tonight. Hundreds of cinders were loaded and spread to create a hard base. Motorists are urged not to drive in the same track to preserve the surface.
Charles W. Morse, New York shipbuilder and financier, arrives from France and will go to Washington to face charges related to war contracts. Morse says he left the United States voluntarily, consulted officials, and was told no charges were contemplated before his departure. He intends to defend himself against the accusations.
One man was shot today by six automobile bandits who held up the state bank at Panama NL fifty miles southeast of St Louis. They robbed the bank of 20000 dollars in cash and liberty bonds valued at thousands of dollars. The incident occurred in the early hours as the men escaped with the loot.
New Orleans authorities seized the motor driven freighter Alert after it attempted to ship liquor and champagne valued at $1,000,000 in the New Basin Canal. The seizure follows an in harbor operation by the Volteigi in New Basin Canal.

Large turnout from DeKalb attended the funeral of William Ault held Thursday afternoon at his home west of Sycamore. Born March 11, 1859, in Manyfield township, he was married to Clara Nichols and leaves four children Bessie Fred and two daughters in law, plus four grandchildren. He died Monday night in Savannah Missouri after months of illness from sarcoma.
Several Army trucks passed through here yesterday en route from Camp Grant to the Windy City for postal department Christmas business. They traveled about 25 miles per hour. one driver had engine trouble and became lost, getting stuck in soft mud and walking back to camp to restart.
Lincoln Inn held a Saturday 9:30 concert drawing strong crowd. Patrons lined up for a half hour to secure tables as the room filled before the show. An upcoming act promises an out of town piano player billed as the "king of jazz."
A citywide campaign begins with house to house solicitation aimed at raising six thousand dollars. Women from all parts of DeKalb will visit homes, coordinate with county officers, and seek funds to sustain those in need and create work for the unemployed. A sponsor event by a fraternal group is planned to boost the fund.

A large crowd is expected at the DeKalb lodge district meeting with Genoa Sycamore and Lindenwood Odd Fellows joining DeKalb. District deputy grand master J E Fothergill of Sycamore plans the official visit. Degree work will be deferred to next week and the Rebekah sisters may attend the session.
Swedish Mission church held an interesting service combining two services in one. Rev. E. G. Hierpa, longtime president of the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant, spoke at three services. In the afternoon 21 new members were received and the new parsonage was dedicated. Attendance was splendid and the out of town pastor's sermons were inspiring.
Fifty one members of the Men's Class of a Methodist church traveled to West Chicago yesterday afternoon despite rain. About 60 people from the group attended the evening meeting, with the class arranging an orchestra and delivering fine music. The trip was by automobile and the visitors praised the entertaining program at the West Chicago church.
Aurora Beacon News prints a page article by Dr. Cigrand, Batavia historian, about the Black Hawk war and a historic gathering of Abraham Lincoln, Zachary Taylor, and Jefferson Davis a few miles north. A Kishwaukee field photo accompanies the piece and a marker at the site is urged.
An illustrated program will be held at the Latter Day Saints church tomorrow evening at eight. The event is under church auspices with a silver collection for the Christmas offering. No admission fee will be charged.

Director Miller was absent but Charles Capen of Bloomington chaired the gathering. Francis Blair highlighted normal school achievements, followed by a four course dinner in the exhibit hall and weaving exhibits. Attendees mingled to strengthen relations, with the next session slated for Macomb in January.
Balder Lodge No 12 IOOF held a Saturday meeting electing Chief Joseph Swanson V chief Helmer Carlson recording secretary G Dahlquist financial secretary C Franzene treasurer G I Carlson and trustees Elmer Hegberg for three years with delegates Franzene Engh C W Johnson and alternates Dahlquist A Holstein and G Carlson. A new member class was initiated and progress reported on the New Year’s Eve banquet with plans for the windup of the year and another initiation set for December 27.
H C Gilbert of Galesburg salesman for fire extinguishers died suddenly while at the steering wheel of his car east of Genoa near Fay Coffman farm. The vehicle struck a bank, the motor stopped, and the coroner ruled heart failure. His body went to the Orient hotel then to Galesburg for burial.

M J Henaughan, a real estate man, has been seriously ill at his home for several days. A heavy cold developed into a serious condition with fluctuating progress noted by family and friends. He spent a restless night but showed some improvement later today.
Contractor Charles Hughes arrives in city to start Haish avenue sewer job after completing Genoa project. He states equipment is being hauled to the scene and expects work to begin in two or three days with no fixed completion date.
The Bart City Camp of the Modern Woodmen of America will hold a Tuesday night meeting in Jarboe's hall camp rooms. A big supper will be the feature and organizers expect strong attendance as the event is presented as a revival style gathering.
United Press reports that opponents in the Senate will challenge the new four power Pacific treaty in open debate. Senator Borah of Idaho is expected to attack the pact in a speech to the Senate today or tomorrow after remaining silent on the treaty.
Mr and Mrs Bert Ostboe have moved to California after months in town where he took charge of the Lundberg store while Mr Lundberg was ill They expect to return to Illinois someday John G Lundberg says California is nice but hopes the Ostboes will come back home to Illinois.

United Press reports Lucky Tommy OConnor, Chicago’s infamous gunman, broke from Cook County Jail with help from guards. Police Chief Fitzmorris and State’s Attorney Crowe say the underworld funded the escape, while OConnor’s supporters claim a frame-up. The city offered a $5,000 reward for OConnor, dead or alive, as authorities pursue details of the break and any inside involvement.
