A new act regulates grading packing and sale of apples in closed packages in Illinois. Grades named Illinois Fancy Illinois Number One Illinois Commercial and Private Brand establish size color and defect limits with penalties up to 100 for violations. Also notes mortgage record filing and banking statements law plus a weather line and classified notice reference.
United Press reports from Monitana and Des Moines that street cars were halted as buses take over amid a plague scare. Gov. Smell faces warrants, with Sheriff Mester watching trains as he remains in Kankakee. Berlin authorities begin sanitary barriers against cholera linked to Warsaw. famine relief and refugee movements across Russia and Siberia noted by officials and Senator France.
Two fights on a city street drew brief attention yesterday afternoon and last night. Friends separated the combatants before police arrived. one participant paid a $5 fine plus costs. No arrests were made at the time of the scrapes.
The Ladies of St Marys Altar Society host their Annual Ice Cream Social on church grounds this afternoon and evening. Delicious cake and Peerless ice cream will be served from two oclock. Everyone is urged to attend and enjoy the event hosted by Mrs Walter Traumted, visiting from South Fourth Street.

Caruso’s widow Dorothy Park Benjamin will reside in Italy, with daughter Gloria remaining in Italy while estate matters are settled in America.
United Jess Neaster New Hampshire August 4 President Harding vowed that nothing on earth can prevent America from fulfilling her God given destiny. He said America is firmly founded and hopes his term will see the things they stood for rooted so men may seek peace and higher aims. He spoke to Lancaster residents after leaving Secretary Weeks summer home.
Washington August 4 opening clashes in the Ford Newberry election contest loomed as the senate elections sub committee prepared to hear the report. Democratic members demanded open sessions to consider the investigation into lavish campaign expenditures in 1918 Michigan primaries. Also Britain agrees to any date for the Washington disarmament conference with President Harding suggesting November 11 as the target date.
United Press reports Deputy Barclay was fatally wounded in a pistol duel with saloon keeper William Binder after a dispute over whiskey sales and a demanded bush money. Donovan allegedly accused Binder, leading to the exchange of shots early today.
Washington dispatch reports the Bolshevik mission in Riga has received unofficial information that American prisoners in Russia have been released, according to a cable from the State Department’s representative. The message cites unverified sources and provides no official confirmation.
Chicago retailers and wholesalers join with smaller town merchants to oppose the Fordney Tariff bill. They warn it will raise prices for consumers and hurt competition, urging reform to prevent higher living costs and a new tariff wall. Despite the solemnity, observers felt he had merely finished a part of his career, with the audience’s cheers echoing as if he would return, more alive than ever. The crowd and ceremony marked the greatest tribute in Metropolitan history to the famed tenor and former mechanic.
A United Press report from Washington states the battleship remains the supreme weapon of sea warfare. The Joint Army and Navy Board received the assessment from official observers.
Three armed bandits robbed Thomas Forloda, a Wood River postal employee, of a registered mail包 containing $60,000 designated for Standard Oil payroll and mailed to First and Savings Bank. The theft occurred near St Louis after the robbers pursued the train pouch then fled in an automobile. Police and a citizen posse pursued the thieves.

London dispatch from Belfast reports Premier Craig will likely agree to discuss peace terms with Sinn Fein leader Eamon De Valera. He presided at an Ulster cabinet session where De Valera's invitation to a conference was debated, but a meeting in Dublin is not anticipated. Ulster counties show conflicting reports on acceptance of the new Irish settlement.
Nobleville Indiana reports a 13 year old bride filing for divorce from Floyd Moore after marrying last May. The complaint alleges he carried photographs of other girls. Separately, a notice informs patrons of a feed mill closure from August 5 to about August 15 for machinery upgrades. Ed Conlin Inc.
Special to the Chronicle reports Kishwaukee Country Club led by 27 points in the Northern Illinois District Golf Tournament with 18 holes remaining. Scores list Buckingham, Oakland, Hunt, Fisk, and Tyler among the clubs, with Oakland four points below the high man for low medal and Tyler contending for the fifth man prize. Final returns expected tonight.
Frank Perry aged 27 with no fixed address was bound over to the grand jury under $2000 bail by Police Magistrate Mitchell on burglary and larceny charges. Clarence Strack of Cortland identified Perry as employe e at his farm who disappeared a complete harness set valued about $85. Perry allegedly tried to sell the harness for $10 after claiming to have bought it from a stranger. He will be held until the October grand jury meets.
