The city faces gas shortages as rail strikes ripple through supply chains. Stations ration supplies with limited allocations while doctors receive priority. Public transit riders and others relying on fuel face reduced service and scarcity.
United Press dispatches from Washington report house leaders debating a soldier bonus bill. Four options offer cash, home, vocational training, or credit, tied to days served and capped by funds. Four sub committees have studied proposals. a single bill is expected next week reflecting American Legion demands.
An unidentified black tramp was hanged from a nearby telephone pole by a mob in Pittsboro Kansas after an assault on Sylvia Brown a 15 year old white girl. A white boy Benjamin Franklin Caldwell 16 of Springfield IL who was with the man at the time was saved by officers as the mob carried out the lynching.
The first league game of the season is slated for Thursday at 8 15 PM at the Armory. The Merry Minstrel Maids, arriving from Tampa, Florida, feature Primrose and Pattee in the battery, with Pattee as the sole lady pitcher using the spitball. The White Sox have not announced their pitcher yet, and strong demand for tickets has the grand stand nearly sold out with bleachers expected to fill.
James Hickey and Lorella Fagan were crossing at Fourth and Oak when Will Sutton’s car struck them. Both suffered minor injuries from the rain obscuring vision and causing the crash. They were taken to a physician’s office and are expected to be none the worse for the accident.
Voters in two wards see tight mayoral style races with Captain George Moore and Charlies Swanham contending in Ward Two while A G Kennedy and Charles Moor head face off in Ward Five. Other wards show no contests though pressure from Elk group on Henry Morrill. Polls at city hall opened with 95 men and nine women in Ward Five and 113 men and 40 women in Ward Two by one o clock with polls closing at five.
The school postpones practice due to a week of rain and has a game scheduled for next Saturday in Joliet. The nine has not held a first practice, and the lineup remains undetermined, though officials expect a strong performance with the best material seen at the school.
In Washington on April 20 the navy reports its battered hulk of former battleships as men depart the yards. The chief of operations says the fleet outfits are idle while workers move toward postwar demobilization.

She was 59, lived in the county most of her life, and is survived by husband Andrew Nordquist, two sisters in this city, and a brother abroad. Funeral services will be held tomorrow from the home near Sycamore.
The local rolling station at Camp Grant continues to issue victory emblems. A. J. Brant and Roy Ra of Sterling visited yesterday to enroll in a mechanics course. Eligible veterans who have not received their button can pick it up at the station on Fourth Street to avoid sending discharge papers by mail.

Mrs H W Smith of North Ninth Kent will travel to DeWitt Iowa to attend the funeral of her brother in law Thomas Kelly who died at the Mayo Brothers Hospital after a serious operation. Kelly had been ill for some time and leaves a widow and three children Mary Emily and Louise. The funeral will be held at the deceaseds home in DeWitt tomorrow.

Peeved at the poor Tuor road west of the normal school farmers northwest of the city plan a volunteer effort tomorrow to rebuild the road with cinders. About 12 teams will haul material from the Superior plant to bad spots, leveling mud and grading. Frank Fuller will coordinate volunteers and John Latimer invites DeKalb merchants to join, as in past efforts that improved South Fourth Street and the Clare road.
Chicago reports Colby, new secretary of state and former progressive leader, talked about as temporary chair at the Democratic state convention. Several names including Martin Glynn Homer Cummings Senator Carter Glass and Richard Mullen were listed as possible choices with a decision expected today.
The Odd Fellows met in regular session last evening and conferred the third degree on five candidates. They discussed a big celebration scheduled for April 29. A local delegation including William Fritz B W Hardy Tom Shackelford Fred Jackson D H Shaver and Art Deline visited Genoa to invite Genoa members to attend the function here later this month.
