The newly formed safety commission plans outside experts and railroad engineers to study crossing conditions and removable grade crossings. Mayor Lindstrom chairs, De Estin Pasley acts as secretary as the group reviews temporary and permanent safety steps and visits Aurora to view flashing signals.
A small fire at the rear of the telephone headquarters caused heavy smoke though little damage. Loose wiring ignited insulation and drew a call to the fire department. Firefighters extinguished the blaze within minutes while a second late call about a country fire proved unnecessary as the truck was recalled.
There is little change in the condition of Orville Peterson son of Mr and Mrs Peterson of College Avenue who has been in Chilidden Memorial hospital for over a month with an infected bone in the right arm The infection has not yet cleared up and it is not known when he will leave the hospital The infection is being checked as much as possible and it is not thought that the arm will have to be removed The infection developed when a pin entered the arm piercing the bone.
Police were called to Pershing Park after reports that boys playing base ball discarded their clothing. One lad with a powerful swing tossed the ball so far it landed in the Kishwaukee. To retrieve it, another boy shed trousers and clothing, fetched the ball, then dressed and the game continued.
Nineteen people died and nine were seriously injured when a Santa Fe passenger train struck a Pickwick Greyhound bus near Pueblo Isleta, twelve miles south of Albuquerque. The bus carried twenty seven, including driver F D Williams, and investigators from the district attorney, Santa Fe, and Pickwick Greyhound pressed to determine fault. Identified dead include Mrs Ellis Huff of Los Angeles and Kenneth Huff, plus William Mickle of Santa Monica, with many other victims not positively identified.
In Cincinnati April 12 Mrs Henrietta Bethell wife of General Hugh Keppel Bethell of the British army in India met privately with her daughter Miss Marjorie Schiele 17 in a hotel suite to pursue reconciliation over guardianship disputes ongoing in probate court. A second private talk was anticipated Sunday as the guardianship case proceeds Tuesday.
DeKalb supervisors will decide how the county share of the state gas tax fund will be spent on roads at the June session. A motion to study road building policy was approved, with the road committee and Fred Larson to develop a program. The plan requires Springfield approval before tax refunds are released.
The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce discussed publicity yesterday at noon and earlier in the week, with secretary Reynolds reporting. A pamphlet describing the city and State Teachers College, plus local amusements and churches, will be prepared by Stewart and Hammerich and distributed to tourists near DeKalb filling stations within 15 to 20 miles. The chamber also voted to buy one acre for the Kiwanis park project as pledges toward 100 acres are under way.
Dr. R. E. Strauser of the University of Chicago medical school was injured in a Lincoln Highway crash near Creston. The car rolled into a ditch after leaving the cement and sustained heavy damage. He was treated at Rochelle hospital for scalp lacerations and later reported not seriously hurt.
A fire at the Illinois Northern Utilities Company plant started yesterday when oxide spilled from a switch engine fell on it. Officials said rubbish did not cause the fire. Fire crews stayed over an hour to extinguish the blaze and protect buildings.
Partly cloudy tonight and Sunday with possible showers in the extreme north. Warmer in the far north Sunday. For the Great Lakes region expect considerable cloudiness with rain or snow on Tuesday or Wednesday and rain early in the week over the lower lakes. Temperatures near normal, slightly below midweek.
In Bombay on April 12, bombs ripped through two Great Indian Peninsular Railway stations injuring two. A milk train near Victoria and a Byculla third class waiting room were targeted as leaders of the passive resistance movement expanded their protests. An arrested suspect, Haji Suajsuaem, linked to the 1928 Bombay Bacoity case, was charged. India's National Week culminates tomorrow with a salt producing mass meeting by the seashore drawing over 1,000 volunteers.
Kiwanis club members will meet at the Cottage Cupboard at 11 45 for noon Lenten service at Congregational church. Service runs 12 15 to 1 00. Club session brief with business meeting postponed until next week. Kiwanis double quartet to sing at services.
Chicago April 12 Special Little Eddie Green a third grade pupil at Haish school stands as one of De Kalb’s top savers in the school Savings Bank with over five dollars saved since January earned from shoveling snow. De Kalb schools report over two thousand dollars saved by 1,200 pupils in three months with full participation at several buildings. The thrift program credits Superintendent F W Phillips and principals B C Mohrmann and O T Gabel for strong role.
About a hundred representatives from six area high schools gathered this morning to form a press group. Charter members include DeKalb Belvidere Oregon and Maple Park with Rochelle Dixon likely to join soon and more schools expected next fall.
Youngstown and Bethlehem Steel face a high-stakes struggle as Cyrus H. Eaton challenges the 857,821 votes ratifying the $1 billion merger. DOJ will probe for anti trust issues while experts examine the books and potential injunctions loom. If approved, the combined firm would control about 20 percent of U.S. steel industry.
Lucille Pyper thirteen of Waterman underwent a critical operation at Mayo Brothers Hospital Rochester Minnesota this morning. Alarm is felt over her condition after a spinal tumor required surgery following several days of examination. Granddaughter of Frank Fuller of the city and aunt Mrs Albert Stone left for Rochester to be with her niece.
Harrogate Tennessee April 12 University officials confronted a student strike as about 200 undergraduates demanded reasons for four dismissals. Dean-elect Merlin Miller and Professor Elliott Van Diller faced immediate expulsions while deputy sheriffs monitored campus unrest. The students, led by Clay McCarroll, gathered after the walkout began with cries to go outside and escalated to a mass exit.
J. T. Carr was elected director of the DeKalb Moose Lodge at a well attended meeting. Other officers chosen include Vice Dictator Samuel Raines Prelate Arthur Malec Treasurer Robert Powell Secretary George Bauer and Trustee Gust Peterson.
London April 12 The drafting of the 1930 naval treaty proceeded rapidly with hope it may be ready for signing next week. The plan divides the agreement into three sections. first covers universal terms including humane submarine warfare and a battleship holiday to 1936. The second would establish Anglo American parity and limit fleets to 1936 while the third seeks France and Italy to resolve parity independently.
