Eight Shell Deer Park workers' children honored at banquet

At Deer Park High School’s 12th Annual Awards Banquet on May 20, eight children of Shell Oil Deer Park Refinery employees were recognized. The event noted repeated honors for several youths, including attendees Claudia Jordy Pamela Whitley Kathy Henderson Nancy Locke Kathy Woodworth Kathi Buchanan Karen Locke and Bill Ervin with Shell’s L. J. Hallmark representing the refinery.

Graduates From Deer Park Among Houston Commencement

About 2,300 University of Houston spring graduates received degrees on May 31. Frank Borman delivered the address. Deer Park Graduates at San Jacinto College Ceremony

Graduation exercises at San Jacinto College last Friday saw 230 students awarded diplomas, with 103 graduates. Guest speaker was Dr. J. Carrol Chadwick, pastor of First Baptist Church Center Texas. Deer Park graduates listed include Ronald Anderson, Alfred Battarbee, Marvin Bellows, Craig Bird, Robert Bryant, Edward Crew and others. Glenda Shelton named Favorite of the Sophomore Class and Kathy Langham chosen Miss San Jacinto at the Spring Formal.

Scouts Attend Memorial Day Services in Pasadena

Ten Deer Park Scouts attended the Memorial Day Service sponsored by American Legion Post 521 of Pasadena. Ray Hall led the event with Scoutmaster H. W. Reese and assistant James Rutherford, along with Mr. and Mrs. Felix Ward. An American flag was placed on a veteran’s grave at Grandview Cemetery and Chaplain Dow Herd spoke briefly honoring fallen service members.

City Receives $34,000 Grant For Park Sites

The City of Deer Park was notified that the Housing and Urban Development Agency approved a $34,000 land grant for park land. The city will match with bonds approved in the last election, funding the Parks and Recreation Dept. to about $65,800 for land acquisition at two planned park sites.

Pirates win as early surge sinks Dodgers in league clash

In a high scoring affair the Pirates toppled the Dodgers 3-11 after a big first inning, Ronnie Johnson scattered seven hits to limit the Dodgers while Calvin Crew blanked the Buffs for his third straight shutout. Todd Culbertson homered for the Indians in a losing effort.

Thompson Family Moves to Katy

Coach Albert Thompson, his wife Bonnie, and daughters Regina and Cynthia have relocated to Katy. He becomes vice-president of A. W. Thompson Farms Inc, active in cattle ranching real estate and rice farming near Katy. Thompson left Deer Park Schools after five years as coach.

Boy Scout Summer Camp at Camp Strake

Summer camp for scouts ages 11 to 15 runs August 4 to 9 at Camp Strake with a fee of 18 dollars 50 cents. Fire Dept. The Deer Park School District announces summer offerings across Carpenter Lynchburg Deepwater Deer Park campuses. City Council weighs Shell Industrial Park deal and park land

City Attorney reviews a seven year contract with Shell Oil to develop a 300 acre industrial park west of Deer Park Terrace Addition with 25 to 35 million dollars in new light industries proposed. Council discusses green belt buffers taxation fire protection and deannexation issues while voting to revise the contract and revisit at a workshop.

Burial Held For Fern E Bussey

Fern Elizabeth Bussey, wife of Constable Jake Bussey, was buried May 31 at Grandview Cemetery under Art Simpson Funeral Home direction. She died May 29 at Pasadena Bayshore at age 49. Reverend R N Baker officiated as family thanks neighbors for kindnesses.

The Deer Park Public Library announces new hours and contact details. Located at 3009 Center Street it now uses phone number 479-5276. Weekday hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Evening hours extend to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday closes at 11 p.m.

Jaycees Take 44 Kids To Bill Daniels Ranch Picnic

The Deer Park Jaycees will transport 44 special education students to Bill Daniels ranch on June 7 for the 15th annual crippled children's party. The event in Liberty features doctors and nurses, a Texas Prison Band, and acts by Paul Boesch and Sid Lasher with Roy Rogers previously involved, all free amid a miniature western town setup.

Cheryl Buchanan earns top honors at North Texas State

Cheryl Buchanan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Buchanan of 802 Martha, graduates with highest honors from North Texas State University. She tops a 1,044 strong BA class as a French major and plans to pursue a masters next fall, having been granted a fellowship to assist in the Latin Department.
