Deer Park opens 1975 title defense Friday night hosting Alvin at Clyde Abshier Stadium. Deer coach Gary Berry says Alvin shows improvement over last year with returning lettermen and a veteran squad. Westmoreland starts at QB, with Forbes Dickey and Andress in backfield, Walker at wide receiver as Deer run Wing-T with some Wishbone-T. Defenders Burk and Dyer lead a strong front seven. inexperience is the main concern as pre season games provide needed experience before three district tests.

Deer Park One of Four Texas Honor School Boards

The Deer Park Independent School District board is named one of four Texas Honor School Boards for the 1974 75 year in a program by the Texas Association of School Administrators. Nominated by Superintendent Lebron Williams, Deer Park joins Andrews East Central and Wichita Falls ISDs in receiving the recognition. One of the four will be named Outstanding School Board of Texas at a Sept. 28 San Antonio joint conference.

Charter Revision Hearing Sept 8 by Deer Park residents

The Charter Study Committee will hold a public hearing at 7 30 pm in Council Chambers to gather resident suggestions for changes to the city charter. Those unable to attend may submit written comments to the committee at P O Box 7 Deer Park. The present charter approved by voters in 1960 outlines all forms of city government and regulations.

Three Files For DP School Board Election

As of Sept. 2 three candidates filed for the DP School Board race. Incumbent Bill Hendrick holds position five with W Reginald Knowles challenging him, and Joe Cathey filed for position four. Ballot drawing at 9 a.m. Sept. 4 in the Superintendent's office. Absentee voting starts Sept. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. in the district's administration business office. Trustee election set for Oct. 4.

Community Arts Classes Start September at Local Center

The Parks and Recreation Department offers Conversational Spanish Baton Aerobics Tiny Tots Guitar Folk Square Dance Belly Dancing Archery Dance and Advanced Arts. Registration continues this week and classes begin September 8 at the Community Center 610 E San Augustine. Public meeting at Pasadena Public Library September 10 10 am to noon with representatives Caraway and Brooks. Deer Park Bicentennial Commission meets September 15 at 7:50 pm in Allied Deer Park Bank coffee room. Jack and Jill Club beginner square dance registration ends September 9. Halloween Carnival Plans Made by Parks Department

The Parks and Recreation Department has begun planning the annual children's Halloween Carnival scheduled for Oct 34. Event details are being organized, with activities and safety measures to be announced by the department.

Annual Football Contest To Begin

The annual contest with cash prizes starts next week in Progress. It runs all season with 20 games weekly for readers to predict winners. Top scorer wins 15 dollars, second 7.50, third 2.50. Merchants join, posting weekly win loss records.

Visitors Trapped In Monument Elevator

Thirteen visitors were stranded between the second and third floors of the San Jacinto Monument when an elevator stalled on Sunday during descent from the observation tower. Elevator operator Ollie Bishop said it was the first such incident in nine years. the group crawled through the ceiling, along cables and down ladders to safety. Each rider received a 75 cent refund to cover the inconvenience.
