SJC Raises Tuition For Out-Of-District Students

San Jacinto College raises out-of-district tuition starting September. In-district full-time students pay $50 per semester, while out-of-district students pay $50 plus $5 per semester hour to offset tax revenue differences. Out-of-state students face state-set rates of $200 per semester for 12 or more hours and $17 per hour for under 12 hours.

Fire damages Sivley home in Eldon residence

Fire Thursday night at 121 Irene damaged one bedroom in Eldon Sivley’s home with smoke filling the house. Paul Shelley spotted the blaze, notified the Fire Dept which arrived promptly, and officials suspected an electrical short. Fire Chief Chappell urged fire safety after a Sunday Dutch Street incident with children and matches.

Book Discussion Group Sets Monthly Meeting at Deer Park Library

Residents at Deer Park Library gathered Tuesday to organize a Book Discussion Group. They set the first Wednesday of every month at 7 30 p m in the library meeting room with Robert Martens leading and open participation continues.

Deer Park Fire Chief Odis Chappell’s long service and growth

Odis L. Chappell joined Deer Park Fire Department in 1952 after his wife Edna urged him to help. Elected fire chief in 1964, he expanded from one to two stations and six trucks, guiding budgets, gear, and response to about 30 calls monthly. He holds multiple state and national posts and teaches Red Cross first aid. He and Edna reside at 918 Alyse with son Mike and three daughters in nearby communities.

Burial Service Pending For D. Waggoner

Danny Waggoner son of Mr and Mrs Felton Waggoner 126 East Fifth Street died Monday at Luanda West Africa after an August 10 work accident in Cabinda Angola. He played football for Deer Park and earned a UT scholarship before joining Brown & Root with assignments in Vietnam and Africa. Survivors include his parents a brother George of Dallas and a sister Paula of Monroe La. Burial arrangements were pending.

Civic Center Teaches Baton Twirling For All Ages

Deer Park Civic Center launches baton twirling classes starting Monday September 8. Sessions meet weekly by age with a marching group option for area parades and contests. Major Auto Crash On Highway 225 Involving Two Chevrolets

A Friday afternoon crash at 4 p.m. on highway 225 at Battleground Rd. involved Patricia A. Collins of La Porte and Clarence Jack Thomas of Houston driving 1964 and 1968 Chevrolets. Thomas was charged with failure to yield. Six month old Christine Collins and Mrs. Collins were rushed to San Jacinto Memorial Baytown for care. Thomas received first aid and was released from Bay shore Hospital.

Council Sets Budget and Development Plans for 1969 70

City Administrator Clovis Mann outlines the proposed 1969 70 budget totaling 1 674 848 with 1 308 357 for General Fund and 366 491 for Water and Sewer Enterprise. The tax rate is 75 cents per 100 valuation on 93 297 460 assessed value, up from last year. A public hearing is set for September 23 with adoption by September 30. Plans for Suburban Estates development and 13th Street East extension are discussed with cost sharing and concrete sealing proposed. Deer Park tops Texas City in first scrimmage 13 0

Deer Park varsity coached by Jim Amos defeated Texas City 13 to 0 in a Saturday scrimmage. QB Mike McCulloch connected with Kenny Madden for two touchdowns and added the extra point. Madden and Stevens intercepted passes. backs Langham and Cottrell ran well. Humphries starred at linebacker.
