The Tiger football team hosts a donkey baseball game at Durant Field at 7 p m with $2 adults $1 75 students 75 cents under 11. A Deer Park exes reception follows the Homecoming Game with South Houston October 8 sponsored by the Student Congress in the south cafeteria.
Deer Park plans an $8 million bond issue on December 7 with priorities including $4.5 million for streets and drainage and $1.5 million for sewer facilities. Mayor Bill Black emphasizes drainage as urgent to prevent undrained construction from stalling.
Levi Gentry, founder and first president of the Deer Park Rotary Club, received the Paul Harris Fellowship at the 10th Anniversary Meeting on Oct 1. A retired Church of Christ minister, he helped launch the club in 1966 after moving to Deer Park in 1982, guiding its early growth and dedication to the Foundation's foreign student program.
Deer Park dedicates the new addition to the fire station naming it after Frank Shorty Schindler, the first fire chief elected in 1961. The ceremony followed by a parade featured bands from Deepwater Junior and Deer Park High and junior high schools. Awards for parade floats were given to Cloverleaf and Sugarland fire departments, while Pasadena Fire Department placed second for a 1927 LaFrance.
Dow Park advances to Phase II with bids planned in about three weeks as drainage delays threaten the area. Black urges county action and business pressure on the County Commissioners Court to fund and staff the drainage project, noting the Southeast town drains into Willow Spring Bayou and nearby bayous.
Officials call builders to organize support for the bond issue. Streets priorities include paving 13th Street from Luella to Underwood, and building East Boulevard in sections from 13th Street to Highway 225 and other spans. Right of way for San Augustine Street and X Street to Under is proposed.
