The Deer Park Jaycees rally support for the American Cancer Society, detailing the seven danger signals of cancer and how funds are spent. Speaker Lafield cites that about 900 Americans die daily from cancer and urges citizen help to find a cure soon.
The University of Texas hosts its annual Nuclear Science Symposium with the Texas Atomic Energy Research Foundation and HL&P leading sponsors. About 500 top science students and teachers from across the state will attend the four day event, to learn about nuclear energy work and related topics. HL&P President Carl B Sherman calls the program a real opportunity for students pursuing engineering and science careers to see the latest achievements.
Immunity joins the battle as scientists seek defenses against cancer with support from the American Cancer Society. Researchers focus on immune system roles and potential therapies in ongoing efforts to improve prevention and treatment outcomes.
At the Texas Jaycees State Convention in Amarillo May 13 15 the Deer Park Jaycees earned numerous chapter and individual honors They won a first in Government projects in population division III and placed second in Community Involvement Chapter Management Individual Development Wayland Means plus a third in Publications Artie McFerrin incoming president was named Outstanding Local Vice President of Texas Carolyn Ogden the Outstanding First Year Jayceeette Stan Garrett and others received Tall Texan awards The chapter was rated a Gold Chip and received the presidential Tall Man award plus a membership recruitment prize The Fred Brown Memorial Speak up Award went to the winner of the state speaking contest.
Deer Park planning and zoning members urged the City Council to impose an additional fee on mobile homes along with ad valorem tax. They also asked for a city councilman to join the subdivision and mobile home ordinance committee. Council approved a $3,000 bond rebate for Ben Kaufman and final plat approval for Deer Park Gardens Section 6. New members Mike Warren and Gloria Smith joined, with Charles Gunn chairing the commission.
James J. Wolfskill of Deer Park joined Lamar State College of Technology new Phi Eta Sigma initiates for men. Membership requires a B plus average for freshman year. Dr. W. Brock Brentlinger spoke on Marks of a Good Education. New officers include William Urquhart president Purvis Harper vice president James Wolfskill secretary Ridley Ross treasurer. Faculty advisors are Dr. Edwin B Hayes Dr. A W Yeats and Dr. Roger Yerick.
Delivery of the June 1971 Greater Houston Yellow Pages began May 18 and will take about three weeks. About 500 workers will door‑to‑door deliver 850,000 directories across the metropolitan area, with 1,132,760 copies printed. The 1,448 page directory adds 86 pages, includes an index and information pages, and features a Houston ship channel cover by Karl Hoefel with blue ink instead of brown.
City Hall at 10 p m Friday to appoint a City Administrator who will, in turn, appoint department heads. Elective and appointed officers will serve with city counterparts during Friday. A regular Council meeting at 7 30 p m Friday at City Hall will conclude the day. Last year the council fired the Police chief and the city administrator during the meeting. Mayor urged attendance and a plaque was presented to former councilman Stanley W Young for service from 1965 to 1971.
Ralph Sparks, a sophomore and vice president of the band, is a National Honor Society member since junior high. He is in the French Club and listed in Who's Who in High Schools of America. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Clinton Sparks, 602 Alyse Street, Deer Park, resident eight years, with siblings Sharal Gary and Karen.
Benfield Freeport announced the 17th annual slide rule awards by the Texas Chemical Council. Winners are encouraged to pursue chemistry careers or science studies and may enter an essay contest with a $500 cash prize split between the winning writer and their school. The council unites 57 Texas chemical companies with offices in Austin.
Breen, a longtime professional football figure since 1942, noted for coaching Wally Lemm at Carroll College and his postgame speaking, resides with Betty in Champions Colony, Houston, with three children. Following the banquet, a dance for Jaycees and guests will occur. Tickets at six dollars cover Jaycee and guest attendance.
Mae Vandegriff recalls deciding to proceed with medical tests to save her brother's life. After discussing with children Lesle Reeves Gary Logan and Larry, hospital doctors reassure them of little danger. Leslie's due June 15, Larry's infant Johnny to have May 19 surgery in Gulfport. Mae hopes strength carries her through, notes prayers and support from First Christian Church Pasadena. Mae works as supervisor for a telephone answering service and Vandegriff is a stationary engineer at Methodist Hospital.
