Terrell returned home from the Miss Texas Pageant with fond memories and learning experiences. She appreciated rehearsals and area visits but felt some contestants’ attitudes were off. She hoped to be a finalist and said the title carries more responsibility and time than she expected. Carmen Ann McCollum of Odessa won the pageant.
From July 6 to July 12, Deer Park police arrested six for public intoxication two for misdemeanor theft and one on a Pasadena warrant. A public hearing on a Diamond Shamrock vinyl chloride plant permit is rescheduled for 9 a.m. July 27 at the Deer Park Community Center. The League of Women Voters will speak before the hearing. The Deer Park Tiger Drill Team is still enrolling girls 8 to 12. contact Kathy Bedingfield at 479-1870.

The Progress asks league presidents to submit photos of Optimist Teen age Pony and Colt leagues and Little League members by July 15. A First Baptist Church homecoming is set for August 8 with former pastors speaking. A six week acrobatics course starts July 2 at the Community Center with 5 and 10 dollars fees. Robinson Crusoe and the Tiger screens July 20 at 9 am and 1 pm with 50 cent tickets.
The Deer Park school district will present a 16,036,047 dollar budget to the board of trustees on Monday night along with a proposed tax rate increase. A public hearing at 6 p.m. July 19 at the administration building will explain the budget and hear public input.
State Rep Ed Watson reports staff indicates short range or temporary measures may ease traffic on Highway 225. Highway Department engineer director B L DeBerry says the Highway Commission asked staff to review public comments and Shell report and return with a recommendation within 60 to 90 days. He notes funds are extremely short and focus will be on possible improvements within current funding.
The Progress newsroom adds Linda Thompson as retail advertising manager and hires Glenda Johnston as a classified salesperson. Thompson joined in December 1975 from a prior role as a classified salesperson. Johnston is a 1976 Kirby High School graduate who previously worked at the Tyler County Booster and plans to study journalism at San Jacinto College.
The Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department will start its first training academy on August 24 led by third assistant Chief W G Wieser. Applicants may apply at the fire station located at Center and 13th Streets.
Tenneco and the League of Women Voters reached an accord on expanding Tenneco's vinyl chloride plant in Deer Park with the League dropping opposition in exchange for tighter permit provisions to reduce emissions. Tenneco will fund a scientific conference on carcinogenic pollutants and emissions are limited to 100 tons per year. Meanwhile the Johnny Wilson Trust Fund met its $2500 goal for surgery costs after a dog attack. recovery may need two operations and a victory celebration is planned for July 16 at the American Legion Hall.

After a year and hundreds of hours, the Charter Revision Committee nears the end of its first phase studying articles and issues. Chair Donna Thomas says 200 issues exist and priority setting will determine next steps, including ad hoc panels, before drafting begins. She declined to name a completion date.
Herbert Burnett Carroll known as Hub Carroll runs The Wheel House at Elbridge and Center Streets for drug and alcohol rehabilitation for 51 years. He cites that many current patients misuse prescription medicines and seek help to cope with life.
