Educators Attend Confab at National Education Association Meet
Two Deer Park educators Dr Lebron Williams and Doyle Fenn joined the Texas delegation to the 109th NEA annual convention June 26 July 2 in Detroit Michigan. Texas officers Archie Roberts Patsy Duncan and Jewell Harris also attended with Eliot L Richardson addressing the event. Timely topics included performance contracting for school services aid to non public schools drug abuse education priorities and school integration.

Civic leader Henryetta native earns Texas chamber honors
Henryetta manager and Mrs Vivian Harris of Angleton attended Alvin Junior College from 1961 to 1963 and took Dale Carnegie courses. He became the youngest Texas Chamber of Commerce president at 25 and youngest Rotary Club president in Texas at 27. He joined the Chamber in 1965, served as director 1967-69, vice president 1967-68, and president 1968-69. He chaired West Columbia Library Board 1968-71 and helped establish the first library in West Columbia in 1969, with numerous civic roles in area groups and honors including a governor’s citation in 1971 and recognition in Outstanding Young Men of America 1970.

Regents Approve Pay Raises and Budget Hearing Date
The Regents proposed a 10 percent raise for administrative officers and 15 cent per hour boost for hourly staff. Non teaching personnel would shift to a civil service style job grade system with monthly increases of 25 dollars for grades 2-5 35 dollars for grades 6-9 and 50 dollars for grades above 10. Final approval awaits next year’s budget. A public hearing on August 16 was set. The board also fixed tax rate at 20 cents per 100 and appointed tax assessors, plus witnessed oath of Regent W R Davison. They accepted bids for a marine biology boat gear and yearbook printing and approved handbooks printing.
