The Progress presents a special extra large edition focused on Deer Park life and its growth. It credits residents and leaders for guidance, thanks supporters, and pledges continued strong news coverage serving the area and surrounding communities.
Mary E. Rogers of 2113 Plunkett settled her out of court damage suit against the Pasadena Independent School District and two liability insurers for 18000. The former administrative research assistant filed the suit in 1974.
Mrs. Rogers, employed 20 years by PISD, alleged improper dismissal in 1973 and sex discrimination tied to a counselor’s vacancy filled by another. The district agreed to pay $6000 in federal court before Judge John Singleton.
Friday screenings of Lad: A Dog at the Community Center on San Augustine with two showtimes 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets 75 cents. DiTne Deer Park Rotary Club hosts Deer Park ISD administration on March 11 at North Campus Gym. St Luke's Episcopal Church hosts Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on March 2 from 5 30 to 8 p.m. Tickets 2 adults. Reunion inquiries sought for Pasaden High School class of 20 years at 472 5931 or 473 2881. Center tournament for teens February 26 27 call 479 3002. Dennis Robert Bivens montages exhibit March 1 2 tied to Houston Bicentennial. First Bank hosts Palette and Brush Guild art through week. Pasadena City Council meets March 3 at 7 30 p.m. in city hall chambers.
Center Planned Allen International Development Corporation buys 9.7 acres on Bay Area Blvd and Space Center Blvd near University Green. Sharon Allen announces a two level 210000 square foot mall called The Riverside with interior landscaping a flowing stream space for about 50 shops and three restaurants. No construction date yet.
The EPA approved an 18 month permit allowing Shell to continue discharging biosolids from its Deer Park plant into the Gulf of Mexico about 140 miles south of Galveston. Shell must propose an alternative disposal method by Aug 1 1977 after evaluating options like wet oxidation or land farming.
Five men filed for city council as of Feb 24. Incumbent Gordon Robb and Jim Kite seek Position 4 while Earl Dunn runs for Position 5. Voters choose between Bill McDonald and Walter Hall for Position 6. Robb chairs Deer Park Realty office and has civic roles. Kite works for HUDCO Consultants and leads local groups. Dunn is a former mayor and Shell retiree. McDonald owns a construction firm.
Jackie Gore named general manager of the Fort Bend Mirror a Hartman newspaper serving Missouri City Stafford and Sugarland. She joined Progress in 1973 as society editor and rose to news editor in 1974 winning a 1975 feature award.
David Wheat of Deer Park is named director of federal relations at the University of Houston. The 1966 Deer Park High School graduate will liaison with Congress and the White House, analyze federal policies, and seek public service opportunities for UH. He reports to Dr. Allen Commander and has handled federal relations since June 1975. The election date mentioned is April 3.
Walter Hall a 33 year old chemical salesman and former Deer Park City Councilman native of Baytown Texas and Vietnam veteran seeks public office. He highlights family ties education and experience promising to listen to residents and translate needs into action.
Patrons provide financial support enabling Deer Park schools to maintain class sizes under the state and regional limits. Policy sets maximums of 25 for kindergarten and first grade, 28 for second and third, and 30 for other classes. Music and PE can be larger but still within accrediting limits.
Linda and Timmy Stanley celebrated their tenth anniversary on February 19. Bill McDonald acts as matchmaker for seven year olds. Bob Holder received a birthday surprise on February 24. Frances Weiss and Bob Tavel bid farewell with a sendoff. Joe Fields treats friends to lunch. The flu spreads as Linda Thompson, Suzanne Roquemore, and Mrs Doyle Land recover, joined by Licia Karr, Marvin Kornegay, Ginger Baker, Molly McNair, Bill Strange, Gordon Kirby and Pat Bogwell.
