Camp Dodge near Des Moines houses about 48 000 soldiers with 22 miles of land divided into divisions. About 7 000 to 8 000 workers labor amid lumber shortages while 3 000 guards enforce passes. The Three Hundred Fiftieth Infantry draws from dozens of Iowa counties with hospital care, cantoned officers, and a new cantonment paper The Dodger.

Iowa State College extension officials launch a statewide seed corn campaign with 32 county agents and 27 trained men. They urge farmers to select, dry, store, and test seed ears from strong, mid height stalks, using the double string method, and to hang ears in dry vented quarters to prevent freezing. W. W. Flint notes farmers must act now to prevent a repeat of the 1915 seed failure.
The Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo on October 1 through T offers farmers and businesspeople from small Iowa towns a chance to study high grade cattle and grade stock alike. An educational exhibit will show dairymen how to determine if each cow in their herd is profitable and how to boost production and reduce costs.
The Ossian Winneshiek Red Cross Chapter celebrates a member who knit garments for American soldiers in two wars. In the 1860s Mrs. F. E. Jones knitted for the boys of 1861, answering the call again as a loyal volunteer in later conflicts.
Mrs St. Clair Stobart known as the Lady of the Black Horse will speak Monday November 5 on women at the front and Red Cross work. She founded the Women's Convoy Corps and led hospital units in Belgium and Serbia during the war. Her career includes escape from Aachen, leadership at Antwerp, Cherbourg hospital work, and the Kragnevatz field hospital.
A wartime message asserts that most Americans of German ancestry are true Americans at heart while pledging loyalty to the United States. It notes vigilance against a small minority potentially disloyal and emphasizes sympathy for Germany amid the war.
