Experts say killed in action and died of wounds never exceeded 20 percent of total casualties, totaling roughly 1082 fatalities per 10,000 mobilized.
Governor W L Harding at the Des Moines state fair mass meeting urges any millionaire with farming skill to return to farming. He says those who face winter with sauerkraut potatoes cabbage beets and vegetables have as much reserve as money in the bank.
Sheriff Ellingson received a governor proclamation calling a special election on October 15 to decide a proposed Iowa constitutional amendment banning the manufacture sale or keeping for sale of intoxicating liquors. If approved Iowa becomes dry. Ellingson must ensure proper publicity in Winneshirk county papers and handle other election details.
The Department of Agriculture urges women and girls and boys to gather wild blackberries to support the Army and Navy rationing effort. Wild berries picked by children will help reach the 11,000,000 pounds of blackberry jam needed by canning houses amid cultivated fruit shortages.
A August 22 Decorah Journal editorial attacking foreign language newspapers is challenged by L M Enger who defends Norwegian Americans and the Norwegian American press. He condemns Blanket accusations of disloyalty and cites Decorah Posten as loyal and pro Allied while noting Norwegian candidates in local politics and support for G N Haugen.
