The French embassy cites alarming develop ments as the two German armies lie about forty miles apart with Paris threatened by a southeast turning move.
Washington reports Brigadier General Frederick A. Funston in Vera Cruz clashed with Carranza and requested U.S. troops. War department withheld the news for three days. observers fear renewed Mexican turmoil and possible American intervention before the end of the European war. Carranza’s conduct has strained U.S. patience, with officials calling him betrayer to the United States after Huerta’s ouster.
