Iowa miners produced 7,289,529 short tons of coal in 1912 valued at $13,152,088, down from 7,331,648 tons in 1911 though the average price rose to 1.80 per ton. 16,370 men worked 188 days that year, averaging 445 tons per man, with fatalities falling to 19 from 40 in 1911. The central southern fields cover about 20,000 square miles, with 13,000 usable under current conditions, producing noncoking bituminous coal higher in sulfur.

A 50 cent admission for all state fairs may be agreed on at the annual conference. State fair board secretary A. R B. Corey said many fairs already charge 50 cents and the plan aims for uniform statewide pricing, not considered excessive.
