Rare May choral concert in Decorah

On May 12 the Decorah Choral Union presents The Lay of the Bell an oratorio by Max Bruch with soloists Mme Whyland Mrs W M Thurston Mr M J Brines and Mr Gustaf Holmquist a chorus of 120 and an orchestra of 25 under Prof Carlo A Sperati The event is billed as the season's best and Holmquist is noted for his bass artistry A full house is anticipated Monday evening May 12

Memorial Day Observance Plans Evolving In Town

Local editor notes uncertainty about a parade for Memorial Day with old soldiers weighing feasibility. Proposes a lightweight parade with veterans on a reviewing stand and student participation, followed by opera house exercises. Attorney Nelson to give May 30 address and Rev Lack to preach May 25 at Grand Opera House.

Big Six Teachers' Association Formed At Waukon Meet

The Big Five Teachers' Association expands to six counties adding Chickasaw and will meet in Decorah for the 1914 session. Officers elected include President Cherney of Guttenberg Secretary Miss Garrison Fayette High School Treas Pye Waukon and Executive Chair Mrs Eva Fleming Decorah. Potential principal speaker could be Judge Ben Lindsey of Denver.

California Tourists Return Home After Winter Visit

A group of California visitors including Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Hoyt Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Williams and Florence Mrs. A. C. Baker and Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Williams returned last Friday. Mr. Baker toured Oregon apple regions criticizing costs and market quietness. C. R. Williams says California serves mainly as a winter resort for the rich and old, noting ice on Pasadena tubs and closed orange packeries though next season looks brighter.

Characteristically Gillilan on Decorah Lyceum Plans

The note from Strickland W. Gillilan, poet humorist, previews his Decorah lyceum appearance next season and mirrors his wit with a line about President Wilson and Lincoln. He will contribute poems to May Designer and June American Magazine and Outdoor World and Recreation.

Prosperous Decorah Gas and Swenson Valve Firms Busy

Decorah shows strong industry as the Decorah Gas Co and Swenson Valve Co run at full tilt. Foreman James Reardon notes overtime and Sunday work, with the gas plant delivering about fifty thousand feet last Sunday and daily output around thirty cubic feet, while Swenson Valve Co. struggles to keep up with orders.

New Methodist Church Planned at Mt. Auburn

Rev. M. Luther Hill reports plans for a new $10,000 Methodist church on the old parsonage site at Mt. Auburn. The 52 by 56 foot edifice will seat 250, include a full basement with dining cloak and furnace rooms, and most funds are already paid. Benny County Times credits Hill for steering the project.

Curtin Attends National Agricultural Society Meeting

J. Curtin left Friday for New York to attend the National Agricultural Society annual meeting. As a state fair board member he acts as a state representative, with Mrs. Curtin accompanying him.

Decorah Ties With Visitors as Miss Haines Connection Noted

Players on the All-Chinese ball team visiting Decorah recall Miss Nelle Haines formerly a Decorah public school manual training teacher now in Honolulu. The group toured Decorah high school singing for students. The piece also notes Decorah's Rev. VU. Gi. B. Pierce gave an invocation at the International Kindergarten Union meeting in Washington.

Death of Former Decorian John Meuser

Durango Colorado April 28 1909 former Decorian John Meuser died of cancer the previous evening at age after a life in Durango He was the son of Joher a jeweler and served as deputy sheriff district clerk and alderman He is survived by his wife two sisters and two brothers

Hymeneas: Sherry Johnson wed at Rev Howe’s in Decorah

Kathleen Stella Sherry and Melvin A. Johnson married at eight o'clock Saturday morning with a small bridal party. After a wedding breakfast at the bride's home they left for Cresco and Minneapolis, to be at home after June tenth in Peter McCaffery house. The bride, educated at St Mary Academy Prairie du Chien, is the daughter of Hughne and wife. The groom works with Peter Johnson & Sons. Also, Miss Edrie Smith and Mr Iver Draker married yesterday at the bride's parents home in Fremont township with many local friends offering congratulations.

Obituary of Lorentz H. Rygg Pioneer Stone Mason

Lorentz H. Rygg died Saturday morning at his Decorah home after a lingering stomach illness. Born December 29, 1831 in Frosten Throndhjem Norway he immigrated in 1870 with his family. He lived in Hesper Cresco and Fillmore County before moving to Decorah in 1890 where he purchased the home of his death. He was active in United Lutheran Church serving on the church council for years. He leaves a widow four sons Hans John Andreas Johannes and two daughters Mrs. C Clausen and Mrs. Tollef Twenge twenty grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral was held Tuesday at 2 PM at the United Lutheran Church with Rev Schmidt officiating.
