Debating Team Chosen for Inter-Society Contest
At Luther College an inter-society debate Tuesday evening pitted Irving against Amphictyonie. The Irving team F. E. Reishus A. M. Wisness l and Victor Bjorgo argued the negative on the Panama Canal Bill toll exemption. Grant Rahn Carl Knutson and Justin Peterson spoke for Amphictyonie. Rahn Reishus and Knutson earned top marks and will argue the same question against Gustavus Adolphus College in Decorah later this month.

Death of a Young Girl in Madison Township
Anna Qualley daughter of Mr and Mrs Alf Qualley of Madison township died last week Wednesday at the home of John Rygg on Franklin street after an illness of two weeks from pneumonia and tonsillitis. She attended Decorah high school at the time of her illness and death followed despite care. The funeral was held Friday and was largely attended by friends and neighbors. Rev Schmidt officiated and interment was in Haugen cemetery south of town.

John Jordahl of Springfield township departed Monday for California where he will join his family. He rented his farm to his stepson and will spend much of the year on the coast. His son, previously in poor health, has improved since going there and recovery is hoped. The chief difficulty is asthma.

Bad Chimney Fire Sparks Alarm on Broadway
Citizens heard a fire alarm Saturday night near Mrs Griswold Howell house on Broadway as a chimney burned. Fire was subdued with salt and caused little damage. moments later the St Cloud hotel chimney caught fire but was quickly quieted with salt.
Unusual winter sighting reported in Ossian
C S Boice recounts a rare incident from Ossian where Theodore Daniels drove into town with a large pocket full of something unusual. while traveling he spotted a gopher dash across a snow covered road and killed it with his whip, noting pocket gophers usually stay buried during winter hibernation.

February Temperatures Extremes Across Dry Month
February displayed unusual temperature swings with a high of 50 above zero on the 19th and a low of 14 below within five days. The 64 degree range was notable for the region and precipitation was minimal, marking a very dry month.

Resumption of Ice Harvest Delayed by Cold Snap
Cold weather last week pushed the ice harvest to resume after a planned two week closure. Ice was carted through city streets last Saturday to provide belated filling for a few private houses as BEAR'S introduced a new Spring underwear line.
Stock Shipments Highlight Large Hog and Livestock Movements
Last week saw large receipts and shipments of live stock. Ole Ellingson of the Farmers' Co operative society bought and shipped six double deckers and three standard cars of hogs, while Mr Burreson for Reeves had five double deckers. Each car carried 110 to 117 hogs, totaling over 1200 hogs shipped. One car of cattle and several cars of horses were also moved. Anderson Bros shipped one car Monday to Milwaukee and two cars by U S express to East Williston, L I, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Money involved is left for readers to calculate.
