Invasion of White Grubs Threatens Eastern Iowa Crops
The Republican reports Eastern Iowa counties face a large white grub invasion in 1915, with areas previously damaged in 1912 and 1914 at highest risk. Entomologist R. L. Webster warns adults, the May beetle, were abundant in 1914 and will return in large numbers. Infestations expected in corn, potatoes on sod, timothy and bluegrass over two years old, and for fields uncultivated in 1914, with clover and alfalfa as exceptions. Recommendations include corn following corn to escape grubs, targeting Allamakee, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Jones, Jackson, Winnebago, Fayette, Buchanan, Linn, and Clinton counties.
