In a talk with John S. Williams last Saturday he said crops in Winne-shiek County show exceptionally good prospects. A Calmar trip via Geo. Mizener revealed a strong corn stand with deep color, about a foot high now and knee-high by July 4. Small grain also looks promising.

Farm House Burns in Glenwood Township Fire

Sixty Years Of Church Work At Springfield United Lutheran
The Springfield United Lutheran church celebrated its sixtieth anniversary with about fifteen hundred attendees last Sunday. Former pastors Rev. Olaf Lysnes and Rev. M. P. Ruh spoke. Rev. Lysnes is son of former pastor Rev. D Lysnes. A noon picnic followed by a love feast featured addresses from several clergy and a missions offering. Community leaders and early pioneers named include Jens T. Venem, Jacob Thorgrimson, Knut Haakenson, Gullick Lien, and Jorgen Severson, among others, with two survivors.

Work on Boiler House Begins at Public School
Ex cavating for a new boiler house at the public school begins Tuesday morning. The plan calls for a 40 by 43 feet structure extending north from the south line of the smokestack, with capacity for four carloads of coal and two boilers of 40 hp and 50 hp for efficiency and reliability, using the school’s smoke stack to save costs.
Improvements in Rowan area spark home upgrades
The Rowan barn at State and Main is being resided and will appear new after painting. A new cement walk fronts W. M. Strand and C. M. Wilson, with crossings to the Court street path from the Congregational church. Wilson added a cement-floored porch enhancing his home. T. T. Hogewell begins the foundation for a new house in Rowan's addition.

Rock Island Train 443 Wreck Near Clermont
Train 443 on the Rock Island bound for Decorah derailed near Clermont last Thursday due to bad track. The smoker and day coach left the rails but no injuries were reported as passengers were moved to the baggage coach and a coach was removed when a down train arrived.

Obituary: Furman F E Conover Dies in Decorah at 82
Furman FE Conover, born June 20, 1830 in Lewis County New York, died June 18 1913 at his Decorah Iowa home two days before turning 83. He came to Iowa in 1855, lived in Allamakee then Winneshiek, settling Frankville township before retiring to Decorah. Survived by wife Mary L Bigelow and two sons Dr F W Conover Decorah and Dr J F Conover Calmar, plus a New York brother and sister. Funeral held Friday at home with Rev H H Green officiating and interment at Phelps Cemetery.

Animal bounty payouts show countywide gopher kills
County Auditor Shea reports bounty payments this year totaling 979.05 for ground hogs pocket gophers wolves and foxes. About 125 for wolves and foxes, one third for ground hogs, leaving roughly 527 for pocket gophers. With a ten cent bounty, an estimated 5 000 to 6 000 pocket gophers have been killed and their claws brought to the courthouse.
