Many locals spent the weekend visiting relatives and friends across Iowa and Minnesota. Travelers include Mrs. Ronan and son Leo to Cresco, Miss Fay Hallman to Austin, Mrs. Norton to Bonair, Miss Dickinson to Cresco for commencement, and Clara Hoyt from Evanston returning home.
The Grand Opera House hosted the Decorah commencement with 23 graduates. Dr. H. H. Green opened the ceremony, Eva Fleming introduced speaker P E McClenahan who spoke on The New Education. Diplomas were awarded to eighth and senior classes, with musical numbers and a junior senior reception following.
Bill Robins and crew of electric line workers reached the city Saturday night to install the new electroliers. He says the cable has shipped and could arrive any day. Other materials can be secured quickly, and work should start within a week or ten days.
The stork visited Prof and Mrs Gammertsfelder delivering a baby boy. In Minneapolis Mrs Henry Larson learned of a daughter born that morning to her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Thos J Olson at their home.
Ri A Slocum of Miles City Mont concluded his visit Monday at the home of Mr and Mrs A C Hagemeier and departed for the west Mrs Slocum accompanied him Mr and Mrs John Dahl and daughter Helen went to Forest City last Friday to visit Mr Dahl s sister Mrs Dahl and Helen will remain for some time Mr Dahl returned Monday Mr and Mrs L B Dale are enjoying a visit from Misses Walborg Bjorn of Zumbrota Minn Inga Monson of Kindred ND Hilda Barrum of Holman Wis and Emily Hazard of Milwaukee this week
On a Friday evening near Decorah a three year old ran onto the track as a Rock Island freight approached at eight miles per hour. Fireman Byers crawled from the engine and saved the child by throwing him off the track just before the cowcatcher. The mother retrieved the shaken child, who was unharmed besides fright. The engineer and other crew were unnamed in initial reports. The child belonged to Mr. and Mrs. John Akre, near Nordness.
Henry E Kennedy returns to Decorah after forty three years living in Fort Dodge. He visits nephew James McCusker and siblings Francis Kennedy and Mrs. Wm Makepeace. Kennedy formerly lived on Washington Prairie near what is now Ammi Smith farm and remarks on the remarkable changes since his last visit.
Mrs. Luther Reed visited relatives Mr. and Mrs. Warren Buel in Alberta Lea last week. Mr. Buel was in a hospital and Mrs. Buel ill. Reed found Mr. Buel had died the previous Monday and Mrs. Buel survived about twenty four hours after Reed's arrival. Funeral services were held Saturday. Reed returned home Tuesday.
The man found beside the railroad between Castalia and Postville has been identified as Karl Knutson, a farmer living between Eldorado and Fayette. He had been returning from South Dakota and is believed to have fallen from the midnight train, suffering a fatal head wound and a broken arm.
Next Sunday Rev. J. R. Greene D D longtime Constantinople missionary will preach at the Congregational church. He is Mrs. F. H. Baker’s brother in law and at eighty remains strong. He discusses Mohammed vs Christ in the morning and Do Missions in Turkey Pay in the evening.
Herman Preums top performance at Luther College earned him the Spalding trophy secured by Richard Schrubbe as the tennis champion of the year.
Promoters Weiser and Bear announce bookings for the next season at the Grand. The lineup includes Baby Mine starring W A Brady, Fine Feathers under H H Frazee, and The Girl and the Baron with Al Rich. Decorah anticipates top entertainment and a successful season.
Fred Carlson began last Saturday and has laid a new sidewalk on Water street from Ness's grocery to the N. H. Adams seed house. The improvement corrects a badly deteriorated walk.
Sunday morning service at 10 30 features The Balance Wheel of Life. The evening service is withdrawn to allow attendance at a missionary service held at the Congregational church.
Iowa marks its seventy five year birthday on June 12 1913 referencing the 1838 Van Buren act that named the state Towa and adopted the wild rose as its state flower. Citizens urged to wear a rose as symbols of state pride.
F E Biermann has received official notice of appointment as postmaster at Decorah and Senate confirmation. Arrangements for bonds are nearly complete, with installation expected around the 4th of July. The last Democratic postmaster, John Finn, took office twenty eight years ago in the building now home to Decorah Gas Company.
The record notes three successive frosts from June 7 to 9 across the east with New York recording the coldest historical thermometer read, and snow in Montreal. Crops largely escaped damage aside from straw hats.
