Homing Pigeons Readied by Milwaukee Club
Decorah residents know little about homing pigeons while Calmar hosts many. John Sanders of Wells Fargo acts for the Independent Flying Club of Milwaukee, sending coops of pigeons to be released when weather permits. About 500 pigeons across eleven pens were released and tracked via telegrams and club records. Each bird carries a metal leg ring and a rubber band with owner codes. Some birds fly from Milwaukee to Calmar about 200 miles away, sometimes in four hours, faster than trains. A few birds lose their homing instinct and stay with local birds.
