College Band Returns From Sixth Tour With Praise

Luther College Concert Band arrived home Friday afternoon at four after completing their sixth concert tour and third Pacific Coast trip. The Decorah Merchants band welcomed them at the depot and escorted them to the opera house for a closing concert. The program featured Balfe and Schubert pieces, Grieg Norwegian Dances, Revel Angélique, Offenbachiana, and By the Swanee River, plus chorus encores. The band’s refined tone and skilled execution reflected strong training under Director Sperati, and it is expected this may be their last long trip for a time as Sperati plans to form a new band from the ground up. Rumors of coast troubles and harsh criticism were discussed, but the band’s managers clarify no blame on Sperati or the college. The tour nearly collapsed without Sperati’s intervention, but the group returned with a solid financial balance and a strong record.
