Washington February 14 Auguston Bacon U S Senator from Georgia for nearly nineteen years and chairman of the foreign relations committee since 1913 died after ten days illness. He was the first U S senator elected by direct popular vote under the seventeenth amendment.
Agricultural extension reports from 1 150 bank cashiers show 1913 hog cholera caused large farmers losses in Iowa totaling about 39 7 million dollars. Hogs lost 2 827 007 and valued at 28 270 070. Cattle feeder losses around 500 000. District figures list Winneshiek county as relatively fortunate with others showing varying totals.
Winneshiek representative Hon L M Enger announced his bid for the Republican senatorial nomination in the Winneshiek Howard district. Elma resident Henry L Spaulding also seeks the nomination. Local supporters say Enger offers the strongest chance to unite the party and win the seat.
Henry Vollmer a Democrat from Davenport captured the Second district congress seat in a February 7 special election to replace the late Irvin Pepper. He beat Republican Harry Hull of Williamsburg and Progressive C. P. Hanley of Muscatine by about two thousand votes, carrying Scott Clinton Jackson and Johnson counties while Hull won Muscatine and Iowa counties. Hull ran a strong tariff campaign and Hanley finished third as Roosevelt carried the district two years ago.
Ninety seven of ninety nine counties protest the coming year road improvement plan. Vinton Wright and Palo Alto counties file the largest objections while only two counties express satisfaction. The highway commission reviews protests and will not release hearing results soon. Prize fighting is boxing in a virulent stage.
Ossian Bee notes G A Meyer of Calmar will reenter the primaries for Congress against incumbent G N Haugen in November. It names 8 E Young and Joseph Campbell as rumored aspirants and criticizes frequent candidate changes that hinder voter understanding.
The annual report by state fire marshal Ole Roe to Governor Clarks records 63 deaths from fires in Town last year, 21 from gasoline explosions. It notes rising property losses, blame on carelessness, and a 3344 percent gasoline increase over two years due to more farming autos.
The Laysan Island exhibit featuring birds water sand and desert flora opens during commencement at the University of Iowa June 14 to 17. Prof. C B Nutting head of zoology announces the exhibit that records the world’s remarkable bird center set to be depleted in years ahead. A special program during commencement week honors Prof. Nutting Homer R. Dill and others who made the exhibit possible.
