Governor Kirkwood Statue Arrives at Capitol

Numerous towans visited Washington last Thursday to view the Samuel J. Kirkwood statue. The bronze figure by Vinnie Ream Hozie, known for the Lincoln statue, was delivered and installation begun in the Capitol rotunda. The base is Tennessee marble. Kirkwood joins former Senator Harlan in Statuary Hall with ceremonies planned later.

Thanksgiving at Soldiers Home Highlighted by Large Turkey Dinner

At the Iowa soldiers' home in Marshalltown on Thanksgiving, 970 members and civilian staff enjoyed a feast prepared with 890 chickens averaging 3.5 pounds, 4.5 bushels of potatoes, 83 one pound loaves of bread, and a wide range of accompaniments. The meal used three barrels of flour and 15 pounds of baking powder among other ingredients, with 165 pumpkin pies and 36 gallons of canned pumpkin, plus 48 gallons of milk and several other treats. Jelly donations from the W R C and Ladies of the G A R supplemented the feast.

Lever agricultural extension bill gains committee approval
